You do not need to have been a builder back home to explore labouring. You do need to be honest about your experience, understand instructions and be ready for a physical day. Start with work you can do safely now; add specialist skills once you know which direction you want to go.
These are practical role descriptions, not promises of vacancies or fixed entry rules. Employers use job titles differently, so compare the duties as well as the name.
A sensible place to startRequirements, courses & companies
You help keep a building site moving: unload deliveries, move materials to the right place, clear waste and help tradespeople with tasks you have been shown. Some days are repetitive. Doing the simple jobs properly matters when several crews are sharing a small site.
Can I start here?
Ask for general labouring or site clean-up work with supervision. “Skilled labourer” often means the employer expects you to arrive already comfortable with particular tools or tasks.
What do I need?
White Card for construction work, site induction and the required PPE. Additional machine tickets only if the placement involves operating that equipment.
Useful experience: stock handling, removals, farm work, warehouse shifts or any job where you followed instructions and worked reliably on your feet.
Good if you like practical workRequirements, courses & companies
You support a particular trade: prepare materials, organise equipment, help with assembly and keep the work area ready. A mechanical TA in a workshop and a carpenter’s assistant on a building site can have very different days. Read past the title.
Can I start here?
Some employers train beginners; others want someone who can use named tools confidently. Explain what you have actually used and whether it was supervised.
What do I need?
White Card when the job is construction work. Heights, EWP or other training depends on the actual tasks. Being an assistant does not authorise you to carry out licensed electrical or plumbing work.
Useful experience: repairs, assembly, maintenance or workshop work. List the tools and tasks you have experience with.
Check transport before applyingRequirements, courses & companies
Civil crews work on roads, drainage, services and other infrastructure. Labouring may involve moving materials, preparing work areas and supporting experienced workers around plant. Sites can be far from where you are staying, with early starts or changing locations.
Can I start here?
Look for labourer or crew-assistant roles. Plant operator, pipelayer and experienced asphalt hand are different positions; a new ticket alone may not meet their experience requirements.
What do I need?
White Card plus the project’s induction. Plant, confined-space or traffic-control duties need their own checks—do not assume a civil labouring job qualifies you for all of them.
Useful experience: outdoor manual work, following exclusion zones and working with a crew. Ask whether the shift starts at a depot or on site.
Ask exactly what is being removedRequirements, courses & companies
Strip-outs can involve removing fittings and clearing materials from offices, shops or renovation sites under direction. That is different from being qualified to demolish a structure. Dust, noise, hidden services and unknown materials make the briefing especially important.
Can I start here?
A supervised clean-up role may be an entry point. Do not accept “just knock it down” as a task description, or claim experience with demolition tools you have never used.
What do I need?
White Card for construction work and task-specific training. Asbestos awareness is not asbestos-removal training or a removal licence. Stop and tell the supervisor if an unexpected material needs identifying.
Ask who provides respiratory protection, what training is given and whether the project includes asbestos work. Do not buy an asbestos course merely because an advert says “demo”.
Choose construction or maintenanceRequirements, courses & companies
Landscape construction creates outdoor spaces: preparing ground, moving soil, laying turf and assisting with paving or retaining structures. Garden maintenance is more about mowing, weeding, pruning and looking after established grounds. They are related, but employers may want different skills.
Can I start here?
Assistant and maintenance crew roles can suit newcomers. A team-leader advert usually expects independent planning, plant knowledge and equipment experience.
What do I need?
White Card where the work is construction. Powered equipment needs suitable training; do not assume a mower, brushcutter or chainsaw is included in a general induction.
Useful experience: gardening, grounds work, planting, outdoor shifts and careful work around customers’ property. A licence may help if the crew travels between jobs.
Physical work with a specialist crewRequirements, courses & companies
You might move materials, prepare work areas and help a crew before or after a concrete pour. Timing can be important and the workload may arrive in bursts. An assistant role is different from an experienced concreter, formworker or steel fixer.
Can I start here?
Ask whether the crew will train a labourer or expects you to perform a specialist task independently. A job title that lists several trades is worth clarifying before you travel.
What do I need?
White Card and task-specific instruction. Height, lifting and plant requirements depend on the work; exposure to concrete dust or wet cement also needs proper controls.
Useful experience: repetitive physical work, following a sequence, measuring and keeping up with a team without cutting corners.
More than ordinary housekeepingRequirements, courses & companies
Site clean-up keeps working areas clear during a build. A builders’ clean prepares a completed space for handover and can involve detailed work around new surfaces. Ask which kind of cleaning is involved: the tools, hazards and pace are not always the same.
Can I start here?
This can suit someone with cleaning or hospitality experience, provided the employer offers the necessary site and task training. Do not assume it means an indoor shift with ordinary household products.
What do I need?
White Card where the duties are construction work. The employer should explain dust controls, chemical handling and access equipment before you start.
Useful experience: careful cleaning, working to a checklist and spotting defects without damaging finishes. Ask whether equipment and supplies are provided.
A route towards equipment workRequirements, courses & companies
Yard hands help organise materials, prepare orders, keep loading areas clear and assist with deliveries. Work may be at a building supplier, equipment-hire yard or industrial depot rather than on a construction project.
Can I start here?
Look for yard-hand or labourer roles that separate manual duties from forklift operation. Some employers want a licensed operator from day one; others have roles without driving duties.
What do I need?
Forklift operation needs the appropriate licence. A White Card depends on whether the work is construction, not simply whether the business sells building materials.
Useful experience: warehouse stock work, accurate picking, housekeeping and checking deliveries. Ask about lifting aids, traffic routes and customer contact.
Hands-on work beyond constructionRequirements, courses & companies
An offsider helps pack, protect, carry and load household or office items. You may work inside people’s homes, deal with stairs and travel between jobs. Care with belongings and clear communication are as important as moving quickly.
Can I start here?
Ask about offsider positions if you do not hold the required truck licence. “Driver/removalist” combines responsibilities and may need a different licence class.
What do I need?
A White Card is not a blanket requirement for ordinary furniture removals. The employer still needs to train you for the work and equipment; particular sites can have extra entry requirements.
Useful experience: delivery work, customer service, careful handling and working in pairs. Confirm how travel between jobs, long days and overnight trips are paid.
Useful for practical all-roundersRequirements, courses & companies
Maintenance assistants help with routine upkeep, moving equipment and preparing areas for repairs. At a resort, facility or residential property, you may also need to work neatly around guests or residents. Find out what “maintenance” means in that particular advert.
Can I start here?
A supervised assistant role can be accessible. Sole-charge maintenance work is a different proposition if you have not done the tasks before.
What do I need?
Requirements follow the duties: construction induction where applicable, equipment training and any required trade licences. Pool chemical work also needs appropriate instruction; it is not something to improvise.
Useful experience: practical upkeep, housekeeping, recording faults and dealing politely with customers. Be clear about tasks you can do and those that need a tradesperson.
A possible next stepRequirements, courses & companies
These crews assemble access systems or move and position loads. Ground support can involve organising components and keeping an area clear, but licensed work is a separate responsibility. It is a pathway to investigate once you know you like site work.
Can I start here?
Ask for a genuine assistant role and an explanation of its boundaries. “Trainee” in an advert does not automatically remove licensing requirements.
What do I need?
Relevant high-risk work licence classes apply to dogging, rigging and specified scaffolding work. Check the training and supervision arrangements before booking a course or agreeing to duties.
Useful experience: following precise instructions, organising materials and communicating clearly. Talk to an employer about which qualification they would actually use.
Usually a more demanding moveRequirements, courses & companies
Shutdowns are planned periods when equipment or facilities stop for maintenance. Support work may mean long shifts, strict access procedures and travel away from home. The attractive weekly figure can reflect a lot of hours and a short project.
Can I start here?
Look carefully at the experience, medical, travel and training requirements. Do not buy a “FIFO-ready” bundle on the assumption that it comes with a placement.
What do I need?
Heights, confined spaces, gas testing, EWP or other credentials can be requested for particular duties. The employer’s task list—not the word shutdown—should determine your training.
Ask about paid travel, accommodation, roster length and what happens when the shutdown ends. See the mining guide if that is the industry you want to target.
