Traffic control work in Australia

Thinking about traffic control while you’re travelling Australia? Here’s what the work involves, which tickets to check and how to approach employers—before you spend your travel money on a course.

This could suit you if…

You can stay focused, communicate clearly and take responsibility for helping road users and crews work safely.

The trade-offs

Long periods standing and repetitive tasks still require full attention. State-specific training and irregular work locations affect how quickly you can start.

01 / IS THIS YOUR KIND OF WORK?

Thinking about traffic control? Start here.

You’ve probably seen the crews beside roadworks: hi-vis, radios and a stop/slow sign. The job is to help road users move through safely while the crew gets on with its work. You follow the site’s plan, communicate with other workers and keep watching what’s happening—even when it feels repetitive.

The person directing traffic

A traffic controller directs road users according to the plan. You need to follow instructions, communicate clearly and stay alert to changes around you. It is a safety role, not a shift you can spend looking at your phone.

The crew setting things up

An implementer puts the traffic arrangements in place and checks them while work continues. A job may ask you to do both roles, but one qualification does not automatically cover both. The ticket names and approval steps depend on the state.

See which tickets your state requires

What could a shift actually look like?

The details depend on the site and your assigned role, but this gives you a useful picture of the working day:

  1. Get to the meeting point. Confirm whether that means the depot or the worksite. Check the time and transport before accepting the shift.
  2. Join the briefing. Find out your duties, who you report to and how the team will communicate. Ask about anything you do not understand.
  3. Work with the crew. Carry out the duties you are trained and assigned to do. Keep communicating and raise problems with the appropriate person.
  4. Follow the break and handover arrangements. Know how cover is organised rather than assuming you can leave your position whenever you need a break.
  5. Finish and record your hours. Confirm the finish arrangements and how to submit your timesheet. Check where and when the next shift starts.

You might enjoy it if…

  • You prefer being outdoors to working behind a counter.
  • You can stay focused even when the task is repetitive.
  • You are comfortable following a plan and speaking up when something is unclear.
  • You can stay calm and communicate clearly with other people.

Think twice about the practical side

  • Expect prolonged standing, time outdoors and close attention to moving traffic. Setup duties also involve handling signs and equipment.
  • Check early starts, night shifts, weather arrangements and how breaks work.
  • Worksites can be awkward to reach from a hostel. “Sydney work” is not a meeting point.
  • Casual shifts can vary with project schedules and weather, so this is less predictable than a fixed weekly roster.

Can you start without traffic-control experience?

Entry-level training routes are available. The employer directory identifies companies mentioning new starters or training pathways; use those routes when you are newly qualified. Course completion alone does not guarantee employment.

You may already have useful examples from other work: turning up reliably, following safety procedures, working outside or communicating with customers. Describe those tasks on your CV.

What about the good pay you hear about?

Ordinary day work, overtime and project agreements can pay different rates. The Pay tab explains the construction-award reference, casual loading, weekend work and paid travel, with worked examples.

A sensible way to get started

  1. Choose the state where you want to work. Check its requirements before booking a course.
  2. Speak to employers. Ask whether they hire beginners, what duties they offer and which tickets they want.
  3. Compare suitable courses. Confirm the full price, practical placement and final assessment arrangements.
  4. Prepare your application. Be clear about your availability, transport, actual qualifications and relevant experience.

02 / SORT THE RIGHT TICKETS

Which traffic-control tickets do you need?

Choose your work state first, then match the training to your duties. A “ticket” means the training or card for that role—not permission to do every traffic-management job.

NSW has three training categories. Match the category to the work you will do; one does not cover all three.

TCR

Entry role

Direct traffic

Covers: Stop and release vehicles using a stop/slow bat or boom gate, following the traffic plan.

Doesn’t cover: Setting up or working with traffic-control plans.

IMP

Implementation role

Set up the arrangements

Covers: Put the planned traffic arrangements in place and monitor the setup.

Doesn’t cover: Stop/slow or boom-gate control, or changing an existing plan.

PWZ

Planning role

Design the plan

Covers: Design, vary or inspect traffic-management plans.

Doesn’t cover: Directing traffic with a stop/slow bat or boom gate, or implementing the arrangements.

Course finished ≠ fully qualified

A valid Statement of Completion permits supervised work while you complete final assessment. Use a SafeWork NSW-approved provider.

Before you pay

Confirm the total price, who arranges supervised experience, assessment dates and card fees. You must be at least 17 to apply for the NSW card.

Course content, assessment and extra requirements
NSW REQUIREMENTS

The three names you’ll come across

In NSW, these cover three different kinds of work. Having one doesn’t mean you can do all three.

What is a Traffic Controller (TCR) ticket?

TCR is the NSW training category for the person directing traffic—for example, stopping and releasing vehicles with a stop/slow bat or operating a boom gate. It is an entry point into traffic-control work. It does not qualify you to set up the traffic-control plan.

Who needs a TCR ticket?

It’s relevant if your job involves directing traffic on or beside a public road in NSW. Look at the duties, not just the job title: someone employed as a labourer or loading-dock worker can need traffic-control training too.

For example, SafeWork describes a construction worker stopping road traffic so trucks can enter or leave a site, and a supermarket worker directing traffic while a truck reverses into a loading dock accessed from a public road.

SafeWork NSW: examples beyond dedicated traffic-control jobs

What do you learn on the TCR course?

There’s more to it than holding a sign. The stop/slow training unit covers preparing for the job, understanding the instructions, watching traffic conditions and communicating clearly with the rest of the crew.

  • Check the work instructions, hazards and equipment before starting.
  • Use the stop/slow bat and clear signals as trained, while monitoring traffic.
  • Pass messages to other workers, check they understood and report problems through the workplace procedure.
  • Read workplace information, ask questions when instructions are unclear and complete the required reports.

That is why English and concentration matter: you need to understand what is happening and communicate with the team. The course teaches the procedures.

National Training Register: stop/slow skills covered

Is the assessment just a written test?

No. The stop/slow unit includes practical evidence of controlling traffic on at least two occasions. It also includes directing pedestrians with different access needs and using communication equipment. Ask your provider how they organise the practical experience and assessment, particularly if you don’t already have an employer.

National Training Register: practical assessment requirements

What is an Implement Traffic Control Plans (IMP) ticket?

IMP is the NSW training category for implementing the traffic-management plan near a workplace. Think of getting the planned traffic arrangements working on the actual site. IMP alone does not authorise you to use a stop/slow bat or boom gate, or to change an existing plan.

Who needs an IMP ticket?

It’s relevant to workers responsible for putting the traffic arrangements in place, checking them while work continues and closing them down. If a job includes both implementation and directing traffic, check that your training covers both IMP and TCR.

SafeWork NSW: what each training category covers

What does an implementer actually do?

The implementation training covers the whole setup, from checking the plan against the site to packing away at the end. It includes coordinating with other workers, so there is more responsibility than simply carrying cones.

  • Before work: check the site requirements, hazards, resources and whether the plan suits the conditions.
  • During setup: check that signs and devices match the traffic guidance scheme—the layout the crew is working from—and make sure people understand their tasks.
  • While work continues: monitor how the arrangements are working, communicate with the crew and deal with issues within your role.
  • At close-down: coordinate removal or covering of equipment, check and store it, and finish the required reporting.

The national implementation unit describes supervisory responsibilities. Completing it does not, by itself, mean an employer will put you in charge of a crew. Ask what experience and support the particular role requires.

National Training Register: implementation duties

Does IMP cover portable traffic equipment too?

The NSW IMP course includes a unit on positioning, setting up and programming portable traffic-control devices. That unit covers setting equipment up to the scheme, checking its operation, monitoring traffic flow and safely shutting it down. This is a separate responsibility from operating a stop/slow bat.

National Training Register: portable traffic-control devices

Should you book TCR and IMP together?

Start with the jobs you actually want to apply for. Ask the companies: “Do your new starters need TCR, IMP or both?” If they need both, compare combined courses with separate bookings. Don’t choose a package just because it has more tickets in the name.

  • Which NSW training categories will I be assessed for?
  • What is the total cost, including practical assessment and card-related fees?
  • Who arranges the supervised workplace experience if I have no employer yet?
  • What happens if I need another assessment or cannot get a placement straight away?
Can you start working as soon as the course finishes?

Training and final workplace assessment are separate stages. A valid Statement of Completion lets you do the work you trained for under supervision while you gain the practical experience needed for assessment. It is not the same as having completed the whole process.

Ask the provider to explain the steps and dates in writing: training, supervised experience, workplace assessment and the card application. NSW requires practical training and assessment to be face to face. Make sure the provider is approved by SafeWork NSW, not simply advertising nationally recognised training.

SafeWork NSW: training and workplace assessment rules

SafeWork NSW: approved training-provider requirements

What is a Prepare a Work Zone Traffic Management Plan (PWZ) ticket?

This covers designing the traffic-management plan.

You must be at least 17 to get the NSW traffic-control work training card.

Finishing the training isn’t quite the last step. A valid Statement of Completion lets you work under supervision while you complete the final assessment. Before paying, ask the course provider: “Who helps me arrange the supervised work, and who books my final assessment?”

SafeWork: roles, training and cards

You’ll also hear about a White Card. That’s a separate construction-safety requirement if you’re doing construction work; it isn’t your traffic-control ticket. If you already have one, check whether it’s accepted before paying for another.

SafeWork: White Cards

CHECK WITH THE EMPLOYER

Do you need a car or experience?

Ask each company. A job might need a driving licence, your own transport or previous experience as well as the right ticket. Also ask which protective clothing and equipment—often called PPE—you need to bring, and what they provide.

Already trained in another state? Check with SafeWork NSW whether your existing training or card can be recognised before signing up again.

Do you need extra tickets straight away?

Start with what the job you’re applying for needs. Before spending more on another qualification, ask an employer what extra work it would let you do. You don’t need to add plan-design training to your list just because it appears on the course website.

Queensland TC approval, TMI training & practical hours

What is a Queensland traffic-controller accreditation?

It is TMR’s approval to work as a traffic controller in Queensland. You complete the approved training, then apply for accreditation. Passing the course alone is not the final permission to start ordinary traffic-controller duties.

Who needs Traffic Management Implementation training?

TMI is for people reading and putting traffic-management plans and guidance schemes into practice, including installing and removing signs and devices. It is a separate training pathway from traffic-controller accreditation. Ask the employer whether the role needs one or both.

What do you need before booking?

TMR requires traffic-controller applicants to have held an open or provisional Australian or overseas driving licence within the past five years. Check its medical-fitness information and the course’s learning, literacy and numeracy requirements too. A learner licence is not the licence category listed.

How do the 20 practical hours work?

New traffic-controller trainees must complete 20 hours of practical experience. TMR requires approved providers to have an agreement with a placement company. Before booking, ask where the placement is, when it is available, how you get there and whether any additional charges apply. Don’t plan your next flight around the classroom dates alone.

Can you use an interstate ticket?

You still need Queensland accreditation. Previous training may qualify you for a shorter course, so send your certificates to a TMR-approved provider before paying to repeat everything. Traffic-controller accreditation lasts three years; TMI also requires renewal training every three years.

Where should you look for a course?

Use TMR’s training page to find its separate approved-provider lists for Traffic Controller and Traffic Management Implementation. Ask for the full cost of training, practical work and any separate accreditation application fee.

Victoria TC / TMI roles and road categories

Which ticket should a new starter look for?

Victoria uses the Austroads national training framework. Ask about Traffic Controller (TC) if you want to direct traffic, and Traffic Management Implementer (TMI) if the role involves setting up the traffic arrangements. Training also depends on the road category: a course title without its category does not tell you the whole story.

Do you need TC1 and TMI1?

Combined TC1/TMI1 courses exist. Before booking, ask a prospective employer which role and road category their beginner shifts involve. Category 1 is the starting point for urban streets and lower-volume rural roads; don’t assume it covers every road a company works on. Ask the provider about the entry requirements for progression.

Does the classroom course finish the qualification?

The national framework includes post-course practical work and assessment, which must be completed within six months of the theory. Get the placement arrangements and total price in writing, especially if you are travelling and do not yet have an employer.

What if you already have interstate training?

Send your current card and Statement of Attainment to an approved provider. Recognition of a completed national skill set depends on the participating jurisdiction, the card’s currency and any required local content. An older ticket needs its own assessment; don’t assume the word “national” settles it.

Is company accreditation your personal ticket?

No. Victoria also accredits traffic-management companies for work on the state-managed network. Joining an accredited company does not replace your individual training. Its labour-hire workers need valid qualifications too.

Western Australia TC and Basic Worksite Traffic Management

What do TC and BWTM mean in WA?

TC means Traffic Controller. BWTM means Basic Worksite Traffic Management and relates to implementing the site’s traffic arrangements. These are Main Roads WA accreditation categories. If a job involves directing traffic as well as setting up the site, ask whether you need both.

Is WA using the same national course system?

Main Roads says adoption of the Austroads national training framework is on hold. Use its WA-approved training-provider list and ask specifically which Main Roads accreditation the course leads to. Don’t book an interstate TC1/TMI1 course on the assumption that it automatically provides WA accreditation.

Does the training include portable traffic signals?

Main Roads introduced additional portable traffic-control-device units for new and renewing TC accreditations from March 2026. Ask the provider to explain the practical device training included in your course, particularly if you are comparing it with an older course advertisement.

Who needs more advanced training?

WA also has Worksite Traffic Management and Advanced Worksite Traffic Management categories. These are separate from the beginner TC/BWTM options. Ask what duties you will actually be doing before paying for a more advanced course; the code sets additional prerequisites for those categories.

What if you already have a ticket?

Send your card, Statement of Attainment and recent work history to a Main Roads-approved provider. Ask what can be recognised and what WA training or assessment is still required. We have not verified a single transfer process that covers every interstate qualification.

How can you check a provider or card?

Main Roads’ Working on Roads page links to the approved training providers, accreditation applications and graduate search. Use the current list on that page rather than a saved screenshot: provider approvals can change.

South Australia National training and the February 2027 deadline

What training is relevant to beginners?

South Australia uses national Traffic Controller (TC), Traffic Management Implementer (TMI) and Traffic Management Designer (TMD) qualifications. The category must match the roads and work involved. TC is for controlling traffic; TMI covers implementing the arrangements. Plan design is a separate role.

Should you get TC1 and TMI1 together?

DIT’s beginner guidance suggests the combined category 1 route so workers can both control traffic and set up traffic management on category 1 roads. Ask the employer whether this matches the work they offer, and ask the provider to explain the practical component as well as classroom days.

What if you hold an older WZTM card?

DIT’s July 2026 update says workers must have the relevant national-framework qualification by 1 February 2027. It says old qualifications will not receive extensions. Experienced workers may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning, but evidence review can take weeks or longer. Speak to an approved provider before your existing qualification expires.

Where should you book?

Use DIT’s approved-provider directory. It includes providers such as Civil Train, Access Training Centre and Workzone Training. Ask which role and category they can deliver, where the practical work happens and what the complete qualification will cost. A listing is not a promise of immediate course availability.

Moving from another state?

Send the provider your current card and training documents and ask about South Australian local content. Have them confirm the road categories you can work on before accepting a shift.

Tasmania Approved national training and practical placement

Which training is accepted?

Tasmania accepts the Austroads national framework for new starters and refresher training. The provider must be an Austroads Approved Training Provider (ATP); being a Registered Training Organisation alone is not enough. Check that the course is approved for the role and category you need.

Who needs controller or implementer training?

Ask about TC for directing traffic, TMI for implementing the traffic arrangements and TMD for designing them. Get the employer to name the role and road category rather than asking a college for a generic “traffic ticket”.

Who arranges the practical experience?

Tasmania says ATPs must have partnerships with traffic-management companies that can provide the practical training environment. You can discuss using an existing employer or your own arrangement. Ask for the location, likely dates and any costs before booking.

How long do you have to finish?

After theory, you need practical experience and a successful final practical assessment before receiving the Statement of Attainment. Practical training must be completed within six months of theory. Allow for this when deciding how long to stay in Tasmania.

Can previous experience count?

Existing workers can ask about Recognition of Prior Learning. Bring evidence of what you have done, not just the card. For interstate national qualifications, ask the ATP to check currency and any Tasmanian local-content requirement.

Is a short low-impact course enough?

Short Term Low Impact training is for a restricted kind of work. Tasmania explicitly says it does not qualify you to act as a fully trained traffic controller, implementer or designer. It is not a cheaper substitute for those roles.

Transport Tasmania: training and practical-placement FAQs

Transport Tasmania: limits of short-term low-impact training

Northern Territory Australian licence, NT training and ID card

What do you need for NT Government roads?

The NT lists a relevant completed course, a valid Australian driver licence, a Statement of Attainment from an NT-approved provider and a valid NT WZTM or TTM ID card. You must carry the card while doing the work. If you only have an overseas licence, check this requirement before paying for training.

Which course matches the job?

Training is matched to both role and road category: Traffic Controller (TC), Traffic Management Implementer (TMI) or Traffic Management Designer (TMD). The NT says it has no category 3 roads. Ask the employer whether their work needs category 1, category 2 or both.

Can you transfer interstate training?

If you hold a recognised national skill set, the NT describes a local-content training route. It also has a temporary recognition pathway for some experienced interstate workers without the new skill sets, available during the transition ending in February 2027. Eligibility and approval matter—do not treat either route as an automatic transfer.

Do you need to apply for a card separately?

Yes. Follow the NT’s training and ID-card process before working on its roads. The online application asks for training evidence or a previous card. Keep your certificates available as well as your photo ID.

Where can you find a provider?

The NT’s approved-provider page lists Create Train Achieve and Larrakia Training, with a table showing the courses each is approved to deliver. Confirm the relevant course, practical placement, dates and location directly; not every provider delivers every category.

What qualifications should you ask about?

Ask about Traffic Controller training for directing traffic and Traffic Management Implementer training for setting up traffic arrangements. An ACT Government traffic-control team-leader advertisement lists both a Traffic Controller qualification and RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer. That is an example of employer requirements, not a complete rule for every ACT job.

Will a NSW or another interstate ticket be accepted?

We have not verified a current, comprehensive ACT transfer pathway. Before booking training or accepting a shift, send the employer and training provider your card and Statement of Attainment. Ask them to confirm acceptance for the actual ACT worksite and identify any additional training.

What if the company also works in Queanbeyan?

Ask which side of the border each shift is on. A Canberra-based employer may offer work in NSW, where the NSW requirements still need checking. The company’s office address does not tell you the requirements for every worksite.

What should you get confirmed in writing?

Ask which qualification and training provider are accepted, whether the role includes both control and implementation, how practical assessment is arranged, and which site inductions or construction-safety training are required. We will add a definitive ACT card and renewal checklist once the current authority guidance is verified.

What to ask before accepting a shift
  • Are you taking newly qualified controllers, or do I need logged site experience?
  • Which depot do I report to, how early, and do I need my own car?
  • What is the base rate, what allowances apply, and are any hours guaranteed?
  • Who supplies PPE and a radio? Are there any induction or equipment costs?
  • Can you employ someone on my visa for the time I can commit?
  • If this is placement, who supervises it, is it paid, and will my trainer accept the hours?
Looking for smaller local operators?

Road-authority registers can help you find additional companies. Registration is not evidence that a company is recruiting, and some entries are councils or contractors with their own crews.

05 / MAKE IT EASY TO SAY YES

No traffic experience? Be clear about what you do bring

Use real examples: following safety procedures in a warehouse, staying calm with customers, working outdoor shifts or turning up reliably for early starts. Explain what you did. Don’t relabel an unrelated job as traffic-control experience.

Put the useful details near the top

  • Your suburb and the areas you can reach.
  • Your actual credentials and assessment status.
  • Driving licence and transport, if you have them.
  • Start date, shift availability and how long you can stay.
  • Work rights and any relevant restrictions.

A CV profile to adapt

[Location]-based applicant available from [date] for [shift availability]. I hold [actual credentials / training status] and have experience in [relevant work]. In that role, I [one useful example]. Based in [suburb], with [transport arrangements], and available until [date].

Replace the brackets and remove anything that isn’t true for you.

Your first message to a company

Hi [name], I’m looking for entry-level traffic-control work around [area]. I’m based in [suburb] and available from [date]. My current training and assessment status is [details], and my transport is [details]. Do you take applicants at this stage, and what would I need before my first shift? I’ve attached my CV. Thanks, [name].

If you need supervised work before final assessment, say so. Don’t describe yourself as fully qualified while you’re still completing that step.

06 / KNOW WHAT YOU’RE BEING PAID

Traffic-control pay: rates, overtime and allowances

Compare ordinary pay, casual loading and overtime separately. The examples below explain how construction-award rates work and how paid hours change a week’s gross earnings.

Checked 15 October 2026 · All figures are AUD, before tax unless stated. Award figures below are specific to the named award; they are not a universal traffic-control rate.

Advertised hourly pay: casual and permanent

Casual examples below start at $37.99–$41/hour before super and additional penalties. These include different duties and experience requirements; the higher rate is for an experienced road-crew and truck-driving role.

EmploymentAdvertised hourly payWhat the range means
Casual · Go Traffic, Brisbane$37.99 starting rate; $37.99–$53.18 headline rangeThe advert identifies $37.99/hour plus penalties. $53.18 is not presented here as ordinary weekday pay. Employer advert on SEEK
Casual-to-permanent · Randstad, Mornington Peninsula$40–$41/hour + super + overtimeExperienced traffic control / road crew role requiring an MR or HR licence. The job description says casual initially; no separate permanent rate is published. Randstad advert
Permanent full-time / part-timeCompare separatelyThe casual-to-permanent advert above does not establish a permanent pay range. The award reference below separates the underlying rate from casual loading.

A broad advert range can cover ordinary hours, weekends, overtime or different experience levels. A $35–$70 headline does not establish a $70 ordinary hourly wage—or prove that the upper end is double-time—unless the advert explains the split.

Advertised examples reviewed 21 October 2026. Before tax. The Go Traffic listing does not specify its super breakdown. These are pay examples, not a national salary survey or confirmation that either employer accepts working-holiday visas.

How much does a traffic controller earn in Australia?

Traffic-controller pay depends on the industry and duties. Construction and other traffic work can fall under different awards, while an enterprise agreement may set project-specific rates.

For onsite construction, Fair Work says the Building and Construction Award applies when the employer and work meet its coverage rules. Traffic controllers without industry-award coverage can fall under the Miscellaneous Award. Your ticket name alone does not decide your pay.

Fair Work: which award covers traffic controllers?

A current award reference—not the full hourly rate

The Building and Construction Award lists traffic controller under CW/ECW 2. From the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, its minimum classification rate is $28.62/hour. Required allowances are additional; casual loading and applicable penalties must also be accounted for. Do not treat $28.62 as a complete casual offer.

Award: clause 19.1 and Schedule A.2.2

The Fair Work calculator includes classification and employment type. Enterprise-agreement pay schedules are separate from the award reference shown here.

Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool

What is casual loading—and is it already included?

Under the Building and Construction Award, casual ordinary hours attract 25% loading. A rate advertised as including casual loading already contains that amount.

Simple maths example

If the applicable ordinary rate before casual loading were $32, adding 25% would give $40/hour. A quote of “$40 including casual loading” would already contain that extra $8.

These are illustrative numbers, not a quoted employer rate or an award calculation.

Award: clause 12.4

Do nights, weekends and overtime pay more?

They can, but “night shift” and “overtime” are not interchangeable. Fair Work explains that overtime can apply outside ordinary hours or above ordinary-hour limits; shiftworkers have different rules. Weekend or public-holiday penalties may also apply.

A night shift is not automatically overtime. The applicable award or agreement distinguishes shift penalties from overtime; the calculation below explains the construction-award overtime bands.

Under this award, where a 150% overtime/weekend penalty applies, a casual receives 175% of the ordinary rate; a 200% penalty becomes 225%. That is not the same as multiplying an already-loaded casual rate by 1.5 or 2.

Does a 12-hour shift include time-and-a-half and double time?

It can. Under the Building and Construction Award’s weekday overtime rules, permanent employees get 1.5× for the first two overtime hours and 2× after that. The trigger is working beyond your ordinary hours—not simply being booked for a 12-hour shift.

For example, if your Monday–Friday day shift has eight ordinary paid hours followed by four overtime hours, that means eight hours at your ordinary rate, two at 1.5× and two at 2×. This example assumes 12 paid hours; an unpaid meal break does not count.

Casuals under this award use 1.25× for ordinary hours, then 1.75× and 2.25× for those overtime bands, all calculated from the underlying ordinary rate before casual loading. The split depends on the roster and ordinary-hour arrangements.

Award: clauses 12.4, 12.5 and 29.4

Fair Work: overtime and shiftwork

Will I be paid for travel to the site?

Travelling from home to work differs from employer-directed travel after reporting to a depot or other meeting point.

Fair Work’s construction guidance says that when an employer directs you to start at an offsite location, paid time starts there. If you must finish at an offsite location, paid time runs until you finish there. The site-based fares and travel pattern allowance does not apply in the same way on those days.

Collecting equipment at a required depot before travelling to site can therefore be part of paid work. A travel allowance does not make every home-to-work journey paid time.

Fair Work: starting or finishing offsite

Do you get daily travel and meal allowances—and are they tax-free?

Some jobs pay travel or meal allowances on top of your wages. Which ones you get depends on the award or agreement and whether you meet the conditions; an employer may also offer extra benefits. A daily travel payment does not necessarily include food, and a meal allowance may only apply when you work qualifying overtime or travel away overnight.

Ask what is paid per day or per qualifying shift, whether meals are provided, and whether the payment is an allowance or reimbursement of an actual expense. Get the amounts and conditions in writing so you can compare offers properly.

Be careful with “tax-free”. Your employer cannot simply decide that an allowance is tax-free. Allowances are generally assessable income, with exceptions under ATO rules. Having no tax withheld does not necessarily mean there is no tax to pay. A reimbursement is treated differently from a flat allowance.

Your normal lunch at work is generally a private expense. Qualifying overtime meals and overnight work travel have different deduction rules. An allowance or the ATO’s reasonable amount is not an automatic tax deduction: you must meet the conditions and actually incur eligible expenses. Keep your payslips and expense records.

ATO: work-related travel expenses · ATO: reasonable travel and overtime meal allowances

What if the shift is short, cancelled or rained off?

  • Short shift: under the Building and Construction Award, casuals have a four-hour minimum per engagement when required to attend work.
  • Cancelled before you attend: ask for the cancellation rules in writing. Do not assume that the attendance minimum automatically pays every cancelled booking. Keep the roster and cancellation message.
  • Sent home because of weather: construction-award weather provisions can protect ordinary pay, including for casuals. Fair Work describes a limit of 32 hours in four weeks, with specific rules for new starters. This is different from simply having no shift booked.

Award: clause 12.3

Fair Work: inclement weather pay

Is a higher hourly rate always a better offer?

Not if you hardly get any hours. Use a quiet week as well as a busy week when planning rent and travel. Here is a comparison using invented rates and ordinary paid hours only:

Illustrative week: wages before tax, super, allowances and expenses
OfferPaid hoursGross wages
$45/hour16$720
$38/hour32$1,216

The lower hourly rate gives $496 more gross pay in this example because it has more paid hours. These are illustrative rosters; transport and accommodation still come out of your budget.

Is super included? And what about tax?

Gross pay is the amount before tax and other lawful deductions. Net pay is what reaches your bank account. Super goes into your super fund, so it is not money you can spend on this week’s hostel.

The general super guarantee rate is 12% for 2026–27. “Plus super” puts the employer contribution on top of the wage; “including super” describes a package containing both. Different payslip items can have different super treatment.

ATO: super guarantee rates

Figures are before tax. Use the pay calculator to estimate take-home pay.

What should I check on my first payslip?

Employees must receive a payslip within one working day of payday. Compare it with your own shift records: dates, start and finish times, breaks, ordinary hours, overtime, allowances, deductions and super.

If something does not add up, ask payroll to explain the calculation in writing. Keep your roster, timesheet, offer and payslip together so you can show exactly what you think is missing.

Fair Work: payslips

Before you say yes, get these answers

  • Am I casual, permanent, daily hire or being offered contractor work?
  • Which award or enterprise agreement and classification apply?
  • Does the hourly quote include casual loading? Is super additional?
  • What are the actual rates for the shifts I will work?
  • Where does paid time begin and end, and which allowances apply?
  • What happens if a shift is cancelled or finishes early?
  • Who supplies PPE and the radio, and are any costs or deductions proposed?

An ABN offer needs a separate conversation about the arrangement and costs. Do not compare a contractor invoice rate directly with an employee wage.
