Concreting, formwork & steel-fixing assistant jobs in Australia

You might move materials, prepare work areas and help a crew before or after a concrete pour. Timing can be important and the workload may arrive in bursts. An assistant role is different from an experienced concreter, formworker or steel fixer.

This could suit you if…

You enjoy coordinated physical work and want experience supporting concrete or formwork crews.

The trade-offs

Heavy materials, early starts and time-sensitive pours can make the day intense. Skilled formwork and machinery duties are separate from general assistance.

What does the work involve?

Assistants prepare and move materials, help keep the pour area ready and clean equipment once the crew finishes. Work can build quickly around delivery and pour timings.

Formwork and reinforcement support involve different sequences from concrete finishing. Ask which crew you will support and how much practical instruction is included.

Will it fit my trip?

Get the likely finish time and what happens if deliveries run late. A concrete pour may not fit around an inflexible afternoon commitment.

Ask about wash facilities, suitable gloves and clothing, and the equipment used to move heavy materials. Being fit is useful, but it does not replace a safe method or a crew briefing.

What do I need before applying?

Construction induction and task-specific instruction are essential starting points. Heights, lifting equipment and powered tools require separate checks.

Wet cement and dust need appropriate controls. An assistant should not be left to improvise structural formwork, reinforcement placement or specialist finishing.

Which training is worth doing?

Construction induction / White Card

For construction duties, use your state regulator’s approved training route. The NSW page explains its process; other jurisdictions have their own delivery rules.

Site handling and equipment induction

Workplace induction covers lifting aids, safe handling, equipment and the work sequence on that site. A general manual-handling course does not teach you how to operate each workplace’s equipment.

How do I put together a good application?

Search concreting labourer, formwork assistant or steel-fixing labourer. Check whether an advert actually expects an experienced tradesperson.

Give examples of physical teamwork, measuring, preparing materials and following a sequence. If you are new, say you want a supervised assistant position.

CW/ECW 1(d) — classification base$28.05
