Shutdown & industrial maintenance support jobs in Australia
Shutdowns are planned periods when equipment or facilities stop for maintenance. Support work may mean long shifts, strict access procedures and travel away from home. The attractive weekly figure can reflect a lot of hours and a short project.
You can commit to a defined work block and like supporting a team with a clear maintenance deadline.
The trade-offs
Long shifts and changing shutdown dates can disrupt travel plans. Gaps between projects and site-entry checks affect actual earnings.
What does the work involve?
Shutdown teams work during a planned maintenance window. Support can involve preparing work areas, moving parts, assisting trades and keeping equipment or materials organised.
Projects can involve consecutive long shifts and strict handovers. The site, industry and roster determine what the job feels like more than the word shutdown.
Will it fit my trip?
Get mobilisation instructions before booking transport. Confirm the departure airport or depot, accommodation, meals, deductions and the plan if the project dates change.
Leave recovery time after a run of nights or long shifts. Ask whether the last day involves travel immediately after work and how fatigue is managed.
It is a stronger option after construction, maintenance or industrial labouring experience. Shutdowns concentrate work into a short project: employers need people who can follow site procedures and assist trades safely from the start.
Tickets are job-specific
A White Card is common for construction duties. Working at heights and confined-space training are required on some shutdowns, including the Olympic Dam example below. Forklift, rigging or other high-risk licences are separate credentials for particular duties—not a single shutdown qualification.
Medical and travel readiness
The Olympic Dam advert requires a pre-employment medical and Australian working rights, and prefers applicants based in South Australia. It does not explicitly promise working-holiday visa acceptance. Have your visa details, ticket copies, availability and a recent site-work referee ready.
Access Training Centre — confined-space entry and gas testing
South Australian course covering confined-space entry, permit work and gas testing. These are task-specific skills for assignments involving confined spaces, rather than a general prerequisite for all shutdown labouring.
Practical training in fall-prevention and fall-arrest equipment. Relevant when the job includes height work; it does not qualify you to erect scaffolding or perform licensed rigging. The provider’s location page lists booking availability.
RIIWHS204E Work Safely at Heights: one day, 8am–4:30pm, with Brisbane sessions listed at $265. Use this when height work is part of the job. It does not replace a high-risk work licence for scaffolding or rigging.
Access Training Centre’s one-day course at Dudley Park, SA, lists a full fee from $475 and covers MSMPER205, MSMPER200 and MSMWHS217. The lower CITB fee requires eligibility and is not the general price. Checked 23 October 2026.
RED Appointments recruits trades assistants and industrial workers, including shutdown assignments. Search its recruitment portal for shutdown or trades assistant work and compare location, tickets and roster requirements.
WorkPac recruits labourers and trades assistants for mining, industrial and energy projects. Search by job title and location; compare each role’s tickets, experience, roster and transport requirements.
Civil, construction and industrial recruitment. Register interest or search openings; skilled positions and longer training programs have different entry conditions.
Lead with your current location, project availability and recent construction or industrial experience. Name the tasks you have actually done: assisting trades, handling materials, using tools or working within site permit procedures.
Attach clear copies of relevant tickets and their issue dates. List high-risk licence classes accurately; a short course does not qualify you for every site task.
Use the dated RED project if the location and requirements fit. WorkPac and Protech offer broader recruitment routes for later projects. Availability for the entire shutdown is more useful than a vague statement that you can start soon.
RED Appointments advertises this range for an experienced shutdown trades assistant on an 8–15 November project, with FIFO travel and camp accommodation provided. It is not an entry-level labouring rate.
The advert does not give a daily roster or separate overtime, casual loading and super. The hourly range therefore cannot reliably be converted into a promised weekly take-home amount.
Budget for the gap between projects
A shutdown can deliver a short burst of income, then end. Accommodation attached to the project does not cover the weeks between contracts. For a backpacker, the useful comparison is total paid project hours and travel costs, rather than the headline hourly rate alone.
