Construction clean-up & builders’ cleans jobs in Australia

Site clean-up keeps working areas clear during a build. A builders’ clean prepares a completed space for handover and can involve detailed work around new surfaces. Ask which kind of cleaning is involved: the tools, hazards and pace are not always the same.

This could suit you if…

You like methodical work and want a practical role preparing sites or finished buildings for handover.

The trade-offs

Dust, repeated cleaning and deadlines can be tiring. Working on a construction site brings site-entry and safety requirements beyond ordinary domestic cleaning.

What does the work involve?

A site-cleaning shift clears ongoing construction waste and keeps access routes usable. A final builders’ clean is detailed work before handover, including checking new surfaces.

Ask which of these you are applying for. Carrying rubble and removing marks from finished joinery require different equipment and judgement.

Will it fit my trip?

Find out whether work happens during construction hours or after trades leave. Evening handover deadlines can create very different travel arrangements.

Check the scope before starting: cleaning accessible surfaces does not automatically include high windows, hazardous waste or removing unknown materials. Report damage you notice before cleaning around it.

What do I need before applying?

Construction work requires the appropriate induction. You also need instructions for the products, surfaces and equipment you will use.

Dust, sharp waste and work at height need proper controls. A household vacuum or improvised ladder is not automatically suitable for a building site.

Which training is worth doing?

Construction induction / White Card

For construction duties, use your state regulator’s approved training route. The NSW page explains its process; other jurisdictions have their own delivery rules.

Site handling and equipment induction

Workplace induction covers lifting aids, safe handling, equipment and the work sequence on that site. A general manual-handling course does not teach you how to operate each workplace’s equipment.

How much does it pay?

A cleaner employed by a contract-cleaning business can be covered by the Cleaning Services Award. Its adult Level 1 casual day rate is $33.85 an hour.

Role / shiftHourly pay
Level 1 weekday day shift$33.85
Level 1 Saturday$47.39
Level 1 Sunday$60.93

Adult award minimums effective from 1 July 2026, before tax and excluding super. Casual loading is already included. These rates apply where this award covers the job; an enterprise agreement may apply instead.

A construction labourer doing site clean-up may instead be covered by a construction award. This table is for contract cleaning, not a universal rate for every site-cleaning advert.
