PLAN YOUR WEEKLY BUDGET

What will you take home?

Estimate your weekly wages, income tax and employer super using standard working-holiday-maker rates for 2026–27.

Use your gross hourly rate, including any casual loading. Enter income from all jobs this financial year, before tax and excluding employer super.

Gross / week$1,140.00
Estimated tax / week$171.00
Take-home / week$969.00
Employer super / week$136.80

Why your take-home pay drops after $45,000

While your earnings are below $45,000$969.00 / week

You keep 85¢ of each dollar: 15% income tax.

Once you’re above $45,000, up to $135,000$798.00 / week

You keep 70¢ of each extra dollar: 30% income tax.

That’s $171.00 less take-home per full week at the same wage and hours. Your gross wage does not fall. Only the part above $45,000 is taxed at 30%; your first $45,000 stays at 15%. A week crossing the threshold uses both rates.

You have $45,000.00 left in the 15% band — about 39.5 working weeks at this pay. The threshold starts again on 1 July; changing jobs does not reset your annual tax bands.

Super is separate: the $136.80 weekly estimate goes to your super fund, not your spending money. It is 12% of your gross eligible wages, before fund tax and fees. Crossing $45,000 does not reduce it.

This estimates standard 417/462 working-holiday income tax, not an exact payslip or tax return. It assumes a TFN, a registered working-holiday employer and eligible ordinary wages. Some Australian tax residents from treaty countries (including the UK) use resident rates instead. Check whether that applies to you

Rates, assumptions and sources

Income tax: 15% to $45,000; 30% from $45,001–$135,000; 37% from $135,001–$190,000; 45% above $190,000. The weekly estimate uses the difference in tax on your income before and after this week. The two comparison cards show full weeks entirely within their stated bands.

No deductions, offsets, Medicare levy, loan repayments or other income are modelled. Payroll withholding can differ, particularly with multiple employers. Super includes ordinary wages and only the overtime rows you mark for super. Eligibility rules and the maximum contribution base can change the amount. No salary sacrifice or voluntary contributions included.

Backpacker pay calculator: common questions

How do I calculate my weekly take-home pay?

Enter your hourly wage and ordinary weekly hours, then add any overtime separately. Include what you have already earned since 1 July so the calculator can apply the right tax band. Choose whether your quoted wage includes super or has super paid on top.

Does all my income get taxed at 30% after $45,000?

No. Under standard working-holiday-maker rates, the first $45,000 is taxed at 15%. Only the next portion, up to $135,000, is taxed at 30%. Your weekly take-home can drop when you cross the threshold, but the earlier earnings are not taxed again at the higher rate.

Is super included in my take-home pay?

No. Employer super goes to your super fund. If your offer says “including super”, the calculator separates that contribution from your cash wage before estimating income tax.

Can I include different overtime rates?

Yes. Add separate rows for time-and-a-half, double time, 2.5× or a custom hourly rate. Use the custom rate if your award calculates casual loading and overtime separately. Each row also lets you include super where it applies.

Does this work for every backpacker?

It uses standard 417/462 working-holiday-maker tax rates. Some Australian tax residents from treaty countries use resident rates instead. The calculator links to the ATO eligibility guidance and lists its assumptions above; it is a budgeting estimate rather than a tax-return calculation.
