Choose a suburb or town

53 areas · 264 listings · lowest average first

Small samples of advertised rooms, not a suburb-wide valuation or live vacancies. Bills vary; use the bills-included filter to compare inclusive prices. No shared bedrooms, entire flats or campsite prices enter the room averages.

Select a place for its price range, average and current suburb search.

How the prices are calculated

We take one advertised weekly price per distinct private, single-occupancy room listing. Known compulsory weekly charges are included; variable bills and one-off fees are not estimated. The average is the arithmetic mean, rounded to the nearest dollar; the range is the cheapest to most expensive sampled room. City markers pool the individual rooms, rather than averaging suburb averages. Filters recalculate the sample.

These are a curated snapshot, not every listing. Prices, minimum stays and availability can change; use the suburb search for current rooms and terms. Rooms with uncertain occupancy, shared beds and whole properties are excluded. Campsites and cabins are shown separately for farming towns. Areas without a sample are grey, not assumed cheap.

Room samples come from Flatmates, with source adverts retained in our research records. You can also browse SpareRoom Australia. Listings are not bookings or affiliate offers.

WHEN A FEW NIGHTS BECOMES A FEW WEEKS

Settle in once you know your routine.

Ask your hostel about a longer stay

Ask for a written total for the whole week and whether you can extend. Find out if you’ll keep the same bed, whether kitchen and laundry access suit you, and what happens if your work plans change.

A weekly deal is only useful if you can sleep before an early shift and get home after a late one. Look at the journey at your actual work times.

Compare suburb prices and find rooms

Use the room map to compare weekly asking rents and bills. Open the suburb search to find current rooms, household details and minimum stays. The cheapest room can be less useful if the trip to your shifts is difficult.

View the room and confirm who you’re paying before transferring money. Keep a copy of the agreement and payment receipts. Save a room you find through “Add your own find” in your dashboard.

BRINGING YOUR OWN BED?

A campsite can be your next stop.

Check whether the site takes tents, campervans or both. Look at showers, drinking water, cooking facilities and the drive to wherever you’re working.

Book through the campsite or land manager. A car park on a map doesn’t tell you whether overnight stays are allowed. For NSW, start with the national parks campground directory and check the individual site’s access and booking details.
