Landscaping & garden crew jobs in Australia

Landscape construction creates outdoor spaces: preparing ground, moving soil, laying turf and assisting with paving or retaining structures. Garden maintenance is more about mowing, weeding, pruning and looking after established grounds. They are related, but employers may want different skills.

This could suit you if…

You like being outdoors and want practical work improving gardens and outdoor spaces.

The trade-offs

Weather, digging and moving materials are part of the job. Crew start points and equipment requirements vary between maintenance and construction work.

What does the work involve?

Maintenance crews mow, weed, prune, tidy and care for established grounds. Construction crews move soil, plant, lay turf and help prepare new outdoor spaces.

The day may cover several properties, so loading equipment, leaving sites tidy and communicating with customers are useful skills.

Will it fit my trip?

Find out whether the shift starts at a depot and finishes there. That can make a distant job workable without driving your own car between gardens.

Clarify footwear, sun protection, wet-weather work and who supplies tools. Do not purchase machinery for a casual crew position without an explicit discussion about the employment arrangement.

What do I need before applying?

Construction landscaping needs the relevant construction induction. Garden maintenance has different duties and may not involve construction work.

Ask for training before using powered equipment. A driving licence may be requested when crews travel between properties; chemical application can bring additional requirements.

Which training is worth doing?

Construction induction / White Card

For construction duties, use your state regulator’s approved training route. The NSW page explains its process; other jurisdictions have their own delivery rules.

Site handling and equipment induction

Workplace induction covers lifting aids, safe handling, equipment and the work sequence on that site. A general manual-handling course does not teach you how to operate each workplace’s equipment.
