Backpacker Tax Refund & Tax Owing Calculator 2025–26
Estimate your Australian tax refund or tax owing from income, tax paid and eligible work deductions. For working-holiday makers and international students working in Australia.
Financial year: 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026. Enter your total earnings before tax and total tax withheld for this period, across all jobs. Find these on your income statements in myGov → ATO.
1. Your tax situation
Who this calculator covers
For adults with wages from Australian jobs, one visa type for the year, no spouse or dependants, and no Australian government study-loan debt. Business or investment income, salary packaging and other tax adjustments need a fuller calculation.
2. Earnings and tax already paid
3. Jobs and possible deductions
Select all jobs you did. These are prompts to check your expenses, not automatic claims.
Your eligible expenses
Enter the deductible work-use amount for the year. Each category is counted once across all jobs. Removing a job does not delete amounts you have entered.
Uniforms and protective clothing
Compulsory distinctive uniforms, registered optional uniforms, occupation-specific clothing or protection against a real work hazard. Ordinary black trousers, everyday shoes and office clothes do not qualify just because work requires them.
Read the official guidanceWashing eligible work clothing
Only washing, drying or cleaning clothing that itself qualifies. Keep a calculation of your actual eligible loads or cleaning bills; there is no automatic $150 claim.
Read the official guidanceTools, equipment and supplies
Claim the work-use portion. Equipment may need depreciation rather than a full purchase-price deduction. Enter only this year’s allowable amount, not the full price of an expensive laptop or tool set.
Read the official guidanceWork phone and internet
Use bills and a reasonable work/private usage record. Include only work use and avoid claiming costs already included in a working-from-home fixed-rate claim.
Read the official guidanceTravel while doing your job
Travel between workplaces or clients may qualify. Your ordinary journey from home to work normally does not. Car claims need the correct method and records; do not add petrol on top of a cents-per-kilometre claim.
Read the official guidanceTraining for your current work
Training must maintain or improve skills used in your existing work, or be sufficiently connected to increasing income in it. Study that qualifies you for a new occupation is generally excluded.
Read the official guidanceUnion and professional fees
Eligible annual union or professional membership costs connected with your current work. Enter the amount you paid, excluding reimbursement.
Read the official guidanceWorking from home
Use an eligible actual-cost or fixed-rate method and the required hours/expense records. Do not duplicate phone, internet, energy or stationery already covered by your chosen method.
