A WHV does not mean you get all your tax back
For 2025–26, standard working-holiday-maker rates are 15% on the first $45,000, then 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000 and 45% above that. A refund depends on tax paid compared with your final liability, not simply on leaving Australia.
Check the resident treaty exception
Australian tax residents who are nationals of Chile, Finland, Germany, Israel, Japan, Norway, Turkey or the United Kingdom can fall under the non-discrimination treaty rules. Nationality alone is not enough: tax residency matters too. Use the ATO guidance before selecting resident rates.
Changed visa during the year?
Income earned while holding a WHV may need different treatment from income earned after a visa change. Do not put the whole year into one visa category. The calculator stops for mixed-status cases so it does not present a misleading refund.
Deductions and super are separate
Eligible expenses connected to earning your WHV income can reduce the amount taxed. Employer super is not wages or tax withheld. A departing-Australia super payment has separate eligibility and tax rules; it is not part of this income-tax refund estimate.
