Start with the expense, not a refund target
For work deductions, you generally need to have paid the cost yourself, received no reimbursement and used it to earn your income. Keep the records required for your claim. Mixed personal and work use must be apportioned.
A deduction is not a rebate of the purchase price
A $100 eligible deduction reduces taxable income by $100. At a 30% marginal income-tax rate, that alone saves $30 in income tax, not $100. Offsets, Medicare and income thresholds can change the overall effect.
No automatic $300 or $150 claim
Record-keeping concessions do not create free deductions. You still need an eligible expense and a defensible calculation. Keep receipts where required and records of work use, journeys or washing.
Check expenses beyond your job
Eligible gifts to deductible gift recipients, tax-agent fees, income-protection premiums and deductible personal super contributions have separate rules. Lottery tickets, most fundraising purchases and ordinary life insurance do not qualify just because money was spent. Personal super deductions require the appropriate notice and acknowledgement. These are not automatically included in this employee calculator.
