AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
Rail labourers help build and maintain tracks and railway infrastructure. Find entry routes, rail-access courses, employers and advertised pay below.
Yes, if you want physical work and can commit to a crew’s roster. Casual and shutdown jobs can fit between trips. It takes more preparation than general labouring: rail access, medicals and network inductions add time and cost before your first shift.
Move materials, shovel ballast, help track crews and use tools for the tasks you have been trained to do. Some roles support machinery in a workshop; others maintain railway reserves. Train driving, signalling and protecting a worksite from trains are separate skilled jobs.
Yes, but construction experience helps. Shaw offers a route into rail for suitable civil workers and plant operators. Search for rail labourer, track worker and trade assistant roles; a vacancy for a protection officer is not a beginner labouring job.
If you have never worked on a site, general labouring gives you useful experience while you look for an entry-level rail employer. A course on its own does not secure a placement.
Sometimes. Workfast’s Melbourne rail-reserve advert includes team travel in a company vehicle, but still requires a Victorian driving licence. Other placements can start at different sites or outside public-transport hours. The transport conditions belong to the particular job.
For construction duties: a White Card. For access to the rail corridor: the accepted rail-safety training, medical and network credentials for your role. SARC, an RIW card and a medical are three different things.
Safely Access the Rail Corridor (TLIF0020) teaches you to recognise rail hazards and enter the corridor safely under the required protection. In NSW you will also see the older name RISI.
The national unit is not an all-network pass. NSW and Queensland options below include their network-specific training; other networks can require additional inductions.

Rail Industry Worker is the system used to record your identity, qualifications, medicals and job roles. The card lets a site check that record. It does not replace training or authorise every rail task.
RIW offers individual card applications as well as employer-managed applications. Your profile still needs management by a registered employer, or by you as a sole trader. Approach the recruiting company before paying so you know which network and job role you are preparing for.
RIW card applications and current fees
Category 3 is common for non-safety-critical workers accessing the corridor. Safety-critical duties can require Category 1 or 2 instead. The employer’s role assessment determines the category; the cheap Category 3 option is not a substitute for a higher category.

Yes for rail construction work. It covers general construction safety; it does not cover access to the railway corridor. If you already hold a valid White Card, you do not need another just because you are moving into rail.

Some track roles require rail-infrastructure units or Certificate II training. It is not the same as the one-day SARC course. Employers can also train suitable recruits.
The South Australian option here supplies core units, not the complete qualification. It is a separate option for roles needing those competencies, not a compulsory extra for every applicant.

No. Apply with your existing experience and tickets first. Tell the recruiter you are willing to complete the rail training their placement needs. Employer-backed training can get you into the right course and medical without paying for unrelated qualifications.
4 of 4 listings
Four recruitment routes checked 27 October 2026. Visa acceptance is not confirmed by these listings: include your visa and available dates in your application.
Tasmania · rail labourers and plant operators
Rail experience is not essential for every position. Its training route is aimed at people with proven civil-construction or plant skills. Full-time, part-time, fixed-term and casual arrangements are advertised. Rail medical and drug/alcohol screening apply where required.
Telarah / Hunter, NSW · casual labourer
Support rail-resurfacing equipment in the workshop and on site, including shutdowns. The listing gives no ticket checklist or hourly rate. Use its contact link to apply; this is equipment-support work rather than a train-driving role.
Melbourne, VIC · casual rail-reserve maintenance
Rubbish removal along the Metro network, with crew travel in a company vehicle. Requires RIW, MTM TTSA, Category 3 medical, White Card, a current Victorian driving licence with a clean record and a clear police check. WWCC is preferred. Advertised $38.72/hour plus penalties and super.
Sydney / NSW · rail labour hire
A rail recruitment route to revisit for track-work openings. Its jobs page had no vacancies on the research date; it is not an immediate job offer.
Lead with your location, start date, how long you can stay and the work you have actually done. List tools, civil-site experience, driving licence and transport. Then list your White Card, rail competencies and medical if you have them.
Say so directly. For example: “I’m based in [suburb], available from [date] until [date]. I have a White Card and experience in [tasks]. I have not worked on rail yet, but I’m willing to complete the training and medical for a suitable labouring placement. Are you taking people with my background?”
Arrive early, bring the requested PPE and listen to the briefing. Ask for a demonstration if a tool is unfamiliar. On rail sites, stay within your assigned work and protection arrangements; general construction experience does not qualify you to direct train movements or protect a track crew.
The amount depends on the duties, employer agreement and shift. Here is published evidence rather than a single rate applied to every rail job. Figures checked 27 October 2026.
Workfast’s Melbourne advert lists this casual ordinary rate, with penalties and super extra. It involves rubbish removal along the rail reserve, not track laying. Casual loading is not separately identified in the advert; do not add it again. The role requires existing rail credentials and a Victorian driving licence.
Where the Rail Industry Award applies, adult Level 1 technical and civil infrastructure ordinary rates from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026 are $26.44/hour for full-time or part-time employees and $33.05/hour for casuals, including casual loading. These are minimums, not an advertised market range.
This award covers rail transport operators and relevant on-hire work. Contractors outside that coverage can fall under another award or an enterprise agreement. A rail-site address alone does not establish the award or classification.
Rail Industry Award: coverage and pay tables
They can. Keep ordinary pay separate from shift penalties, overtime and allowances when comparing offers. Shaw advertises above-award enterprise-agreement pay but does not publish an hourly figure. Brimble’s labourer listing also has no published rate.
Reviewed 27 October 2026. Course prices are published AUD fees; medicals and card charges are separate unless a package explicitly includes them. Employers and training providers are linked beside the relevant information.
