AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE

Farm work in Australia: harvest, packing & animal jobs

Start with the work you could actually see yourself doing, then match it to the season and region. Here’s how to find farms, understand the pay and check the visa rules before you spend money getting there.

Green farmland in the countryside

Illustrative photo

This could suit you if…

You are happy to follow the seasons and compare picking, packing, plant or animal work to find a practical role that suits you.

The trade-offs

Weather and harvest timing affect hours. Housing, transport and the actual duties matter as much as the advertised rate or postcode.

Farm work is more than fruit picking

Picking is the obvious starting point, but packing, plant nurseries and animal work can suit very different people. Start with the tasks and conditions you can manage. A job that offers a steady routine and affordable housing can be a better fit than a headline rate with uncertain hours.

Is this a good working-holiday option?

Start with: Harvest picking, packing or other seasonal roles offering induction. Dairy, livestock and machinery jobs may need skills beyond general physical fitness.

Timing: Match your arrival month to the crop and region. A season estimate is not a guaranteed start date or a promise of full weeks.

Without a car: Prioritise employers with an explicit pickup or staff-transport arrangement. A nearby hostel is not proof that you can reach the farm.

Station hand

Work with livestock, fencing and property maintenance on a cattle or sheep station. First-year roles offer a way in; experienced riding and machinery jobs are a different entry route.

Requirements, courses & companies

Can I get farm work without experience?

Many picking and packing roles teach you on the job. Make it easy for an employer to see that you can get to the site, stay for the required period and follow instructions. For machinery, horses or livestock, be honest about what you have actually done. Ask about training for tasks you have not done before.

Harvest roles and entry skillsPicking, packing, thinning and pruning

What do I need before starting farm work?

Do I need a farm-work ticket?

There is no general fruit-picking qualification. Many picking and packing entry roles use workplace induction and supervised training. A White Card relates to construction work; it is not a requirement simply because you work on a farm.

What skills make me more useful?

  • Transport: a licence and reliable vehicle can widen your options, but check the road and parking arrangements. Do not claim you can drive machinery because you can drive a car.
  • Packing and quality: production-line, stock handling and food hygiene experience can be relevant. Give a concrete example of checking orders or preventing damage.
  • Animals: explain the species, tasks and equipment you have worked with, and whether you worked under supervision.
  • Communication: you need to understand stop instructions, hazards, hygiene rules and what counts as acceptable produce. Ask for a demonstration and repeat instructions back if needed.

Should I get a forklift or chemical-handling qualification?

Only if it fits a real role you are targeting. Forklift operation needs the appropriate licence and workplace training; it is not included in ordinary packing induction. Chemical work has task and jurisdiction-specific requirements. Ask the employer for the exact licence or training they recognise, then compare providers. A speculative course can cost more than it helps you earn.

What should the employer teach me?

How to do the task safely, use the equipment, handle produce and get help. Ask about drinking water, shade, breaks and toilets before the shift. Mango sap, ladders and moving machinery bring specific risks. Do not learn machinery by guessing or accept “everyone does it” as training.

Agriculture Victoria: harvest preparationQueensland: fruit harvesting safety

Safe Work Australia: high-risk work licences

Do I need to pay for farm-work training?

For basic picking and packing, start with employers offering induction. There is no general fruit-picking qualification. Dairy, station and horse work need supervised practical training matched to the animals and equipment.

Forklift roles are separate

A forklift licence is useful for designated operating jobs, not compulsory for every packer. Access Training Centre advertises a three-day beginner LF course in South Australia from $770, with the regulator licence fee additional.

What do you need?

Only stated arrangements qualify. Housing can include camping or limited spaces—check each card. No-car results need a confirmed way to reach work, not just a lift into town. Filters do not mean a vacancy is open.

About these results

These growers mention backpackers or working holiday makers in their recruitment material. Sources checked 16 October 2026. Each card links to application details and evidence.

Season matches use the farm’s verified crop and region, not confirmed hiring dates. Longer continuous overlap comes first; seasons starting near your arrival break ties. Other farms may have work outside the calendars we have researched. An application form is not a vacancy, and a listing is not an endorsement or a visa eligibility decision.

When no dates are selected, dated recruitment adverts appear first, followed by applications and enquiries; older notices and closed recruitment appear last.

Use its work-in-the-fruit-industry section to reach grower information and learn about seasonal roles. It is a starting point for finding employers, not the employer for every farm listed. Contact the relevant grower about dates and applications.

Official recruitment route

What about working hostels?

A hostel may introduce you to farms or run transport, but buying a bed is not the same as being hired. Ask who the employer is, whether there is a confirmed start date, how many people are waiting and what happens to your booking if work does not start. Get cancellation and refund terms before paying.

What should I ask before travelling?

  • What is the legal employer name and exact worksite address? Who will pay me?
  • What tasks will I do, when do I start and how long is the job expected to last?
  • What award, classification and employment type apply? Is the rate hourly or piecework?
  • How many hours were available recently, and what happens if rain stops work?
  • What do accommodation and transport cost, including bonds, daily charges and notice periods?
  • If the job finishes early, can I keep the accommodation and arrange my own transport?

Contact the company through its official website to verify an unexpected offer. For labour hire, check the relevant state’s licensing register where licensing applies. Keep your own copies of the offer and charges.

Finding harvest work and checking labour hire

How early should I contact farms?

Once your dates are reasonably clear, contact the growers on your shortlist and ask when they recruit. Ask whether they are taking applications, building a waiting list or actually offering a start date. Reconfirm close to departure: “The season starts soon” and “You start Monday at 6 am” are very different answers.

Can I follow one harvest into another?

Yes, but allow for a gap. Keep enough money for travel, groceries and a bed if the next crop starts late. Do not promise a new farm an arrival date that depends on an uncertain finish date elsewhere. The planner covers selected sourced crops, not every Australian harvest; no result means no matching entry in this planner, not no work in that state.

A farm CV should answer the practical questions

Put your location, availability, work rights, phone number and transport near the top. Tell the employer which role you want and how long you can genuinely stay. A short, clear application is more useful than a page about wanting an Australian adventure.

What if I have never worked on a farm?

Use experience that translates: reliable early starts, repetitive packing, working outdoors, keeping a food area clean or following instructions in a busy team. Include specific tasks and any commercial machinery experience.

A simple first enquiry

“Hi, I’m looking for picking or packing work from [date] until [date]. I’m currently in [town], have [visa/work rights] and [transport arrangements]. My previous work involved [relevant task]. Are you recruiting for that period, and which farm would the work be at? I can send my CV and references.”

Should I just turn up?

Follow the recruitment instructions. Many farms have controlled access, biosecurity rules and no reception desk for walk-ins. Call first; do not drive through farm gates looking for a supervisor. If they invite you to visit, bring a CV and arrive at the agreed time.

What do I send, and when?

Start with your CV and availability through the official channel. Once an employer is verified and onboarding begins, they can explain what work-rights, payroll and bank details they need. Avoid sending identity documents to an unverified social-media account just because it promises an immediate start.

Farm-work pay depends on the job

For adult casual picking and covered packing work, the Horticulture Award starts at $32.18/hour at Level 1 from 1 July 2026. After no more than three months of industry experience, Level 2 is $33.05/hour. These figures include casual loading and exclude super.

Horticulture pay classifications

Hourly work and piecework

A piece rate pays by output, but covered horticulture workers retain a daily minimum based on classification and hours. Higher output earnings are payable when they exceed that minimum.

Piecework daily minimum explained

Other farm jobs use different rates

Grain receivals, wineries, dairy farms, nurseries and aquaculture are not interchangeable pay categories. CBH’s 2026 harvest starting rate is $34/hour; the individual job guides show industry-specific benchmarks and employer examples.

Does this farm job count towards a second year?

For both 417 and 462, qualifying plant and animal cultivation can count in the designated regional areas; 462 also includes Northern Australia. Your duties and workplace matter. Use this check before taking a job solely for visa days.

Does this work location count for my visa?

Choose your visa and actual work, then use the workplace postcode—not your hostel or the company’s head office. This checks the ordinary industry and location rules, not your whole visa application.

Checked 16 October 2026. Ranges include both endpoints. These are designated visa areas, not a list of real street addresses.

Which farm activities count?

Examples include harvesting and packing fruit and vegetables, cultivating plants, and caring for animals for commercial sale or their produce. General garden maintenance and secondary processing such as winemaking do not fall into the same category. A farm postcode does not make every job on that property eligible.

Do I need 88 actual shifts?

Not necessarily. The requirement is the equivalent of three months of normal full-time work, at least 88 calendar days. Ordinary rest days can count within a qualifying full-time period; scattered casual shifts need a longer period. Unpaid weather cancellations do not count. Working a double shift does not earn two days.

What if I have a UK passport?

For a second or third 417 application made using a UK passport from 1 July 2024, specified work is not required. Other applicants normally need three months for a second visa and six months for a third. Do not choose a farm job just because someone says every backpacker has to.
