Which journeys do I need to arrange?

Treat arrival, the daily commute and days off separately. A one-off pickup from the coach station does not cover early shifts or groceries. Accommodation beside a farm may still be far from your assigned worksite.

  • Arrival: who collects you, from which stop, and what happens if the coach is late?
  • Work: where is the pickup, does it cover early starts and every rostered day, and how do you get home if your shift ends early?
  • Life outside work: how will you reach groceries, laundry and appointments, and get to your next destination?

Where can I find farms to ask?

Use the farm finder’s “Can work without a car” filter, then confirm the arrangement with the employer. Say clearly that you have no vehicle and ask whether work moves between properties.

What should I ask about the pickup?

Get the pickup point, time, daily charge and contact number in writing. If a hostel runs it, ask whether you must stay there and whether a bed guarantees a transport seat.

Check what happens after a short shift, rain interruption or move to another worksite. For a colleague’s lift, agree fuel contributions and a backup if they change jobs.

What will it cost each week?

Use two scenarios before moving: a normal week and a week with fewer paid hours. This example uses assumed costs, not a farm or hostel quote.

Illustrative budget for farm work without a car
Weekly costExample
Room$220
Transport · $10 × 5 workdays$50
Groceries$100
Phone and laundry$20
Total before other spending$390

Could you cope with a quiet week?

With $800 take-home pay, that example leaves $410. With $450 take-home pay, it leaves only $60. Rain, harvest timing and shorter shifts can change income while rent continues. Keep arrival travel and an onward ticket outside your weekly spending budget.

What should be confirmed before I book travel?

Get the employer’s name, job duties, start date, pay terms, accommodation and transport arrangements. Fair Work warns about upfront job fees and guaranteed-work promises, and advises caution about paying for accommodation before finding a job.

Keep enquiries separate from confirmed offers in your dashboard. Check specified-work eligibility separately if you need it for another visa.
