Gold pins: saved places. Green pins: previews and suggestions. Blue numbered markers match the table; tap one for its name. Dashed purple links show a gap between the routed road and a place, not a walking path. Nearby pins group together; tap a numbered group to zoom in. Saving does not change directions.
Watch the fleet approach the harbour entrance and head out to sea. This is a harbour-exit viewpoint, not a close-up of the starting gun.
Getting there: Travel to Watsons Bay, then walk via Camp Cove and the South Head Heritage trail. Allow time for the walk before 1pm.
Our first choice is South Head if you are happy to walk from Watsons Bay. North Head gives a higher, wider view; Christison Park suits someone more interested in seeing sails against the open ocean.
The CYCA names these areas in its land-based spectator advice. That advice was published for the 2024 race; it supports the viewing locations, not a promise about 2026 access or transport. The official race and park pages below are the places to check for new restrictions.
Aim to be at your chosen viewing area by midday for the 1pm start on Saturday 26 December 2026. That arrival time is our recommendation, not an admission rule. Add the headland walk to your journey time.
There is no fixed minute when the fleet will pass an ocean viewpoint: wind and racing conditions decide that. Keep the official race coverage open if you want to understand what is happening before the yachts come into view.
These suggestions are public land viewpoints rather than ticketed spectator cruises. Transport, parking and North Head vehicle entry can still cost money. Do not assume an event-day closure or capacity limit is covered by ordinary access rules.
For South Head, the Heritage trail is a 1km loop, in addition to getting there from Watsons Bay. For North Head, use the designated lookouts and account for the onward journey from Manly. Check the linked local alerts before setting out.
Choose one headland and stay there for the fleet. Trying to change sides of the harbour during the start is a poor use of the afternoon. Afterwards, return through Watsons Bay or Manly for the rest of your day.
Take binoculars if you have them, a hat, water and something to sit on. Stay behind barriers: the appeal is the view from the public path, not getting closer to a cliff edge. Ferries are transport, not guaranteed race-viewing platforms.
