LIVING IN QUEENSLAND

Living in Gold Coast as a backpacker

The Gold Coast is a choice of beach lifestyles rather than one compact town. You can combine hospitality shifts with surfing and nights out, but where you live decides whether your day revolves around Surfers, a quieter beach or a long commute along the coast.

IS THIS YOUR KIND OF PLACE?

What living here is like

Choose Gold Coast if…

You want regular beach time and are happy choosing one part of the coast as your everyday base.

The trade-off

The coast is spread out. A room that looks close on a regional map may be inconvenient for your job, and resort-area rents can leave little room for saving.

YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD CHANGES YOUR EXPERIENCE

Where to live in Gold Coast

WORK THAT FITS YOUR STAY

Jobs and earnings in Gold Coast

Hotels, restaurants, bars, attractions and cleaning are useful sectors to explore. Resort work may involve split or changing shifts; a beach lifestyle works better when the commute does too. Tourism demand does not mean an employer will accept every visa or short commitment. Use role-specific entry requirements before spending on training.

A pay benchmark you can compare

For an adult Level 2 employee covered by the Hospitality Industry Award, ordinary weekday minimums from 1 July 2026 are $27.08/hour permanent or $33.85/hour casual. The casual figure already includes loading; super is additional. Other awards, classifications and agreements can give different rates.

A 40-hour week at $33.85/hour comes to $1,354 before tax. With $335 weekly rent, you would have $1,019 left before tax and other living costs. This straight-rate example excludes any weekend or overtime premiums; your roster may attract higher rates. Super is separate from spending money.

How to approach finding a room

Compare private bedrooms with private bedrooms: resort-style apartments and room shares can sit side by side in search results. The Southport, Surfers and Broadbeach samples are not interchangeable. Confirm the stay length, occupants and bills, and consider whether your preferred beach base is practical for the jobs you are applying for.

What makes a room workable for a backpacker?

  • A minimum stay and end date that match your plans.
  • A furnished bedroom if you are not buying and moving furniture.
  • The total weekly cost, including compulsory bills, and enough cash for the stated bond and advance rent.
  • A realistic commute for opening and closing shifts, and housemates whose routine fits yours.

Rent samples do not measure competition or how quickly someone gets accepted. View the property and establish who is entitled to rent it to you before paying; use the applicable state tenancy guidance for your arrangement.

Can you live here without a car?

Translink buses and the existing tram network have 50-cent fares. Check the route that actually serves the address; not every southern beach has a tram stop. Late shifts and trips into the hinterland require more planning than daytime travel along the main corridor.

Meeting people and enjoying your days off

Surf lessons, beach exercise and regular social activities make it easier to meet people away from nightlife. Surfers suits party-led evenings; a quieter beach routine can be a better fit farther south. Rainforest outings are a separate trip, with transport and any tour costs to include.

Try a surf lesson, explore Burleigh’s headland or spend an afternoon on the southern beaches. The hinterland gives you a different side of the region, with rainforest and waterfall walks; theme parks are another option if you want a bigger paid day out. Swim between the flags on patrolled beaches and choose surf lessons suited to your level.

When to come — and what to plan around

Holiday periods can change crowds and accommodation demand. Summer brings heat and storms as well as beach weather. Avoid treating a holiday-period roster as a promise of the same hours all year.
