AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
Trainee mine operators learn equipment and operating procedures through a structured employer programme with supervised practice and assessment. These intakes can offer a genuine start without production experience, but eligibility and the training commitment may not suit a short working holiday.

You want structured learning and can commit to the employer’s training programme and operating role.
Traineeships may not suit a short stop on a working holiday. Buying a private machinery course does not guarantee entry to an employer’s programme.
A genuine trainee role combines structured learning with supervised equipment operation. You may practise inspections, communications, hazard identification and operating procedures before progressing to independent tasks after assessment.
Equipment and mine type matter. A haul-truck traineeship is different from underground production, a maintenance apprenticeship or a privately sold introductory machinery course.
A traineeship is structured training towards an operating role, rather than a few casual shifts. It is most relevant if your available time matches the full programme and its work-rights conditions. If you are moving on soon, compare camp support or other advertised short-term roles instead.
A privately purchased introduction is not an employer traineeship or a job offer. The employer still selects candidates, provides site-specific training and assesses competence. Apply to a named intake first; do not relocate on the strength of a training provider’s employment suggestion.
Operator traineeships involve employer selection, training and supervised work. Before applying, compare the training period with your planned stay and check whether the intake requires local residence or a particular departure base.
Use the named employer’s intake requirements for work rights, licence, availability and assessments. Working-holiday acceptance has not been verified for the Macmahon, BHP or Protech pathways below. A formal traineeship can have additional funding or visa conditions.
Give your licence class, where you live, your available start and end dates, and examples of reliable shift work or practical experience. Apply to the production/operator pathway that matches your aim; the BHP page also links to longer trade-development routes.
Start with the employer’s published intake and required training. Private equipment training is not a guaranteed substitute for employer recruitment or site competency assessment.

Official new-to-industry pathways distinguish production and trade development. Apply only to a matching operator intake; a maintenance apprenticeship is a different occupation and longer commitment.
Queensland mining recruitment includes new-to-industry programmes. Intake eligibility, local availability and training commitments matter for travellers.
Apply to an advertised operator intake and address its selection criteria with examples of safety, teamwork and learning a practical skill. State your residence, licence and work-rights duration honestly.
FIFO applications need your departure location, roster availability and current licences. Use the advertised recruitment process for medicals and site induction; those stages come after the employer assesses your application.
Where the Mining Industry Award covers the work, the classification determines the minimum. These ordinary adult casual day rates include the industry allowance.
| Role / shift | Hourly pay |
|---|---|
| Entry level — induction | $34.41 |
| Level 1 — basic | $35.81 |
| Level 2 — intermediate | $37.09 |
| Level 3 — competent | $38.18 |
Adult award rates effective from 1 July 2026, before tax and excluding super. Casual loading is included. These are classification minimums, not advertised FIFO salary ranges. Additional all-purpose allowances may apply. Contractor workshop, warehouse or hospitality staff may have different award coverage.
A formal traineeship can use training wage provisions; the entry-level classification above describes induction, not every trainee operator contract.
