Stagehand / bump-in crew jobs in Australia

Help unload trucks, move cases and set up concerts, exhibitions and live events. Casual calls can fit between travel plans, but late-night pack-downs and physical handling are part of the job.

This could suit you if…

You enjoy practical teamwork and helping turn an empty venue into a live event.

The trade-offs

Loading and pack-down are physical, often at unsocial hours. Bookings can be irregular.

What does the work involve?

Bump-in is the setup before an event; bump-out is the pack-down afterwards. You may move road cases, position equipment and help keep loading routes clear.

You follow a crew chief and work around technicians with different responsibilities. Being available at unusual hours is often as important as enjoying live events.

Will the work fit around another job?

Crews are needed when an event is built and removed, including early starts and late finishes. A show being held over several days does not mean you are rostered for all of them. Keep availability for the entire booked call and allow time to reach the crew entrance.

Is this technical backstage work?

General crew work can involve moving cases and assembling equipment under direction. Electrical, rigging and equipment-operation tasks need their own qualifications or authorisation. List genuine technical skills separately so you are assigned tasks you can safely perform.

What do I need before applying?

General crew work includes moving cases, furniture and equipment under direction. Technical production, rigging suspended equipment and operating machinery require separate skills or licences.

Venue induction and suitable safety footwear are typical practical starting points. Construction and high-risk duties bring additional requirements; a general event-crew position is not a rigging qualification.

Which training is worth doing?

Site handling and equipment induction

Workplace induction covers lifting aids, safe handling, equipment and the work sequence on that site. A general manual-handling course does not teach you how to operate each workplace’s equipment.

How do I put together a good application?

Search stagehand, event crew, bump-in and bump-out. Give your real lifting, loading, theatre or warehouse experience.

List the shifts you can reach and how you will get home after a late finish. Agencies may screen for previous events experience rather than train every applicant from scratch.

How much does it pay?

For production and support staff covered by the Live Performance Award, ordinary casual pay starts at the induction level and rises with the classification.

Role / shiftHourly pay
Level 1 induction — casual$32.18
Level 2 crew — casual$34.44
Level 3 — casual$36.11

Adult award rates effective from 1 July 2026, before tax and excluding super. Casual loading is included. Calculated from clause 11 hourly rates × 1.25, rounded to cents. Level 1 is an induction classification; the award limits its duration.

The award’s casual engagement has a three-hour minimum. Overtime, Sundays and night crewing have separate rules; a late concert pack-down should not be budgeted as an ordinary daytime call.
