AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
A cellar-door host welcomes visitors, guides tastings and helps them buy wine. It is guest service and sales, often with weekends and booked groups. The work differs from vineyard labour or vintage cellar work, so choose the hospitality listing and explain your ability to communicate with customers.

You enjoy telling a product’s story, hosting tastings and helping visitors choose wines.
Sales and weekend service are part of the role. Reaching a winery without a car can be harder than reaching a city bar.
Prepare glasses and tasting spaces, check reservations and present the wines in the order and style the winery uses. Adapt the explanation to the visitor rather than assuming everyone knows wine terminology.
Process purchases, organise agreed delivery details and explain wine-club offers accurately. Reset between groups, manage stock and communicate with the restaurant or tours team when bookings overlap.
Check the commute to the winery itself, not just the nearest wine-region town. Driving may be practical even where the role does not require a licence.
Learn enough of the estate story to explain it accurately, then keep learning from supervised tastings and team briefings. Never guess about allergens or promise shipping arrangements the winery has not confirmed.
Meet the local RSA requirements for tasting and sales duties. Learn the winery’s approach to sample sizes, refusal of service and groups before hosting independently.
Wine knowledge is useful, but employers may value confident service and sales experience alongside willingness to learn. A wine qualification is not automatically a requirement; read the individual listing.
Check the local regulator before booking. This NSW regulator page explains NSW training; use the parent hospitality guide for other states and recognition rules.
Optional introductory wine study covering foundational knowledge. Check an approved provider’s dates and cost; this does not replace an RSA or the winery’s product training.
Classroom RSA training in Sydney and surrounding suburbs. Published price: $190 (14 October 2026). A USI and identification are required. This is a NSW course; other states have their own recognition rules.
TCP’s NSW RSA course covers SITHFAB021: $190, seven hours plus breaks, in Sydney CBD and listed suburban venues. A USI, required identification and an assessment device are needed. Checked 23 October 2026. Other states: compare RSA providers and recognition.
