AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
Lead visitors on foot and turn local places into an engaging experience. City walking tours are a distinct option from remote hiking: the employer, route and guest group determine the skills you need.

You like public speaking and want to learn a city well enough to bring its stories to life for visitors.
You need to prepare, manage groups and repeat a route in changing weather. Enjoying travel alone does not replace local knowledge or reliable bookings.
Lead visitors along a route, explain local stories and landmarks, answer questions and keep the group together. Some tours focus on food, running or a particular neighbourhood rather than a general city introduction.
The job combines public speaking with practical group management. You need to adjust pace, make yourself heard outdoors and keep the tour interesting for people with different knowledge and interests.
Local knowledge matters. This can suit someone settling in a city and learning it well; remote hiking and driver-guide jobs are separate routes with additional skills.
City walking guides need strong local knowledge, clear spoken communication and the ability to keep a group together. Public speaking, answering unexpected questions and adapting the pace for guests are central skills. A city walking role is different from driving a tour bus or leading a remote hike.
Outdoor walking tours can add wilderness first aid, substantial walking fitness, cooking and passenger-driving requirements. These belong to the duties of a particular tour; they are not standard qualifications for every city walking guide. Employer-specific requirements are listed in Companies & applying.
For city walking tours, learning the route and practising commentary is the most direct preparation. Two Feet & a Heartbeat provides induction, training walks and shadowing, and does not require a guiding qualification. First Aid/CPR must be completed before guiding independently.

Certificate III in Guiding (SIT30322) develops tour commentary, group leadership, regional knowledge and customer service; its core units include first aid. It is a useful professional pathway, rather than a universal ticket for city walking tours. The page showed no study locations when checked, so use the provider enquiry route for the next intake.

St John NSW’s HLTAID013 Provide Remote First Aid is a three-day course with pre-learning. It is designed for delayed access to medical help, making it relevant to remote and multi-day trips. The workplace offering may require a group booking.
City walking guides need accurate local commentary, clear public speaking and group management. Learning the operator’s itinerary and practising the route are more directly useful for that work than remote-expedition training.

Two Feet & a Heartbeat’s Perth/Fremantle advert lists $35/hour for casual guiding. Its employer page says hourly pay plus super, with most guides working roughly 6–18 hours a month. The advert does not itemise casual loading; do not add another 25% to the headline figure.
At $35/hour, 6–18 paid hours would be $210–$630 before tax, excluding super. This is an illustration of the operator’s published typical hours, not a guaranteed monthly roster. The advert requests at least six months’ commitment and First Aid certification.
