The trade-offs
Last-minute changes and departure deadlines can create pressure. Some jobs are office-based; others involve early depot starts and equipment handling.
What would I actually do?
Keep bookings, passenger information and supplier confirmations in step so departures run smoothly. The role can include guest check-in, last-minute questions, schedule changes and coordinating with guides.
Office-based operations focus on administration and communication. Departure support can also involve equipment, freight and early starts at a depot or tour meeting point.
The strongest transferable skills are accurate records, calm customer service and keeping several time-sensitive tasks organised.
What do I need before applying?
Show accurate administration, computer confidence and calm communication. Experience with bookings, rosters or events can be relevant even if it was outside tourism. Name the systems you have used and be honest about the tasks you would need training for.
Driving, first aid and other licences depend on the actual duties. Ask which are essential before paying for training. A support role should not be assumed to include qualified guiding or vehicle operation.

Learn on the operator’s actual system with its permission and supervision; reading the tutorials is preparation, not evidence that you have managed live departures.
Tourism operations — TAFE NSW
Certificate III in Tourism offers a structured foundation in visitor service and destination information. Compare the campus’s units with the administration and operational duties you want. It is an optional broader pathway; a company may instead teach its own software and processes on the job.

First aid and CPR — St John
St John offers HLTAID011 general first aid and HLTAID009 CPR around Australia. Courses include practical assessment, and some use online preparation before the classroom session. Its state booking pages list local sessions and fees.
St John Victoria: first-aid course example
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: $199 for 4.75 hours in class plus pre-learning, or $225 for 7.75 hours in class without pre-learning. These are Victorian options; choose a listed venue and date. First aid is relevant when the role requires it, rather than a universal entry qualification.

What should I put in my application?
Show one example of managing several deadlines without losing details. A short explanation of a booking, roster or event you helped coordinate is more useful than simply saying you love travel. Name the systems you have actually used.
State your arrival date, available months and location. Ask whether the work is office-based, involves driving, or includes early departures and weekend cover. Apply through the employer's published recruitment route.
What about pay and conditions?
Operations employment and an internship are different routes. A position advertised with travel perks alone does not establish a cash salary.
Some companies also advertise internships. Happy Travels lists travel perks for its operations internship rather than a cash wage; establish whether a placement is paid employment or an educational arrangement before relying on it for income. The Kimberley Air Tours role example in Sources covered March–September 2026 and is not a current vacancy.
