Surf instructor jobs in Australia

This is a route for confident surfers who can keep other people safe in the ocean. Some schools train new coaches, but being new to teaching is different from being new to surfing.

This could suit you if…

You have the right teaching and safety skills and enjoy helping beginners gain confidence in the water.

The trade-offs

Lessons involve repeated teaching, moving boards and staying alert to changing conditions. Early starts and weekends can take up your own surf time.

What would I actually do?

Explain technique, reassure beginners and manage a group while conditions change. Lessons also involve preparing and moving equipment, often including large learner boards.

The work combines physical stamina, patience and repeated teaching. Early starts, weekends and time in the water matter more to the day-to-day experience than simply enjoying surfing.

Do I need to be a qualified surf coach?

Strong surfing ability is the starting point. Teaching beginners also means managing a group, explaining safety clearly and helping nervous customers in the water. Being a good surfer alone does not cover rescue or coaching responsibilities.

Two entry routes

An assistant position can provide a route into coaching. Go Ride A Wave starts new instructors as assistants and lists a current Bronze Medallion, first aid and the relevant Working with Children Check or Blue Card. Let’s Go Surfing says previous coaching experience is not required, but seeks strong surfers with customer-service skills.

For a Surfing Australia Foundation coach pathway, Surfing NSW lists online study and 20 hours of practical experience at an affiliated surf school, plus first aid, current CPR, approved ocean-safety training, safeguarding requirements, membership and the relevant child-safety check. Its club-coach course is not the surf-school employment pathway.

Season and availability

Consistent weekends and public holidays are useful because that is when customers book lessons. Choose a school near where you can stay: early beach starts and equipment setup make a long commute less practical.

Courses & training

Foundation Surf Coaching — Surfing NSW

The Foundation pathway combines online learning with 20 hours of practical experience at an affiliated surf school. Register through Surfing Australia’s membership portal and select Foundation Surf Coach. The separate Club Coach course does not qualify you for surf-school employment.

Complete the supporting credentials

Accreditation also requires an approved ocean-safety qualification, HLTAID011 first aid, HLTAID009 CPR, safeguarding induction, state membership and the applicable Working With Children Check. Use the coaching page’s approved ocean-safety-provider link: a short Surfers Rescue course does not meet that requirement.

Surfing NSW accreditation checklist

Keep accreditation current

Surfing NSW’s renewal page sets out ongoing credentials and the annual renewal process. It currently lists an AUD 55 renewal fee. This is a renewal charge, separate from initial coaching training.

How to apply

Include your preferred beach and full available season. Schools may assess both surfing ability and the way you explain a skill to beginners.

How are surf instructors paid?

Go Ride A Wave says its classes usually last two hours and that setup and pack-up time are paid. It describes its rates as above award, but does not publish a current hourly figure. There is not enough verified pay information here to give a reliable Australian hourly range.

Lesson length is not your whole shift

A two-hour class can also involve preparing boards and wetsuits, getting customers ready and returning equipment afterwards. Paid setup time makes a real difference when comparing a per-lesson offer with an hourly job.

Plan around seasonal bookings

Most Go Ride A Wave staff are casual. Weekend availability helps, but a surf-school job is not automatically a full week of lessons. Combine the school’s actual bookings with your living costs before treating it as your only income.
