Surf camp support staff jobs in Australia

Camp support can put you close to the beach without making you responsible for teaching surfing. Look for kitchen, reception, bookings and guest-support work, and check whether the offer is paid employment or an educational placement before planning your budget.

This could suit you if…

You want a surf-camp setting and can contribute through reception, cleaning, kitchen or guest-service work.

The trade-offs

Expect kitchen, cleaning or guest-service shifts. Check paid hours and staff housing separately from guest packages and unpaid internships.

What would I actually do?

Camp support keeps guest stays running through kitchen work, cleaning, reception and hospitality. It is different from teaching surfing or supervising people in the water.

The work can suit hospitality or customer-service experience. The balance depends on the department: a kitchen shift involves different tasks from reception or housekeeping.

A paid support job and an unpaid camp internship are different offers. Compare recruitment details in Companies & applying; a guest surf package is not an employee accommodation offer.

What do I need before applying?

Apply for the department you can work in: kitchen, housekeeping, reception or general hospitality. Relevant experience is more useful than surfing ability for these support jobs. Surf-coaching accreditation applies to teaching, not simply to working at a surf camp.

Kitchen roles involve food hygiene and allergen procedures; reception involves bookings, payments and guest enquiries. Driving guests and supervising surf activities bring separate responsibilities and requirements.

Courses & training

Food handling — DoFoodSafely

Victoria’s Department of Health provides free, non-accredited online food-handling learning. Useful preparation for camp kitchens and catering support; your employer still needs to show you its food-storage, cleaning and allergen procedures.

Coffee skills — TAFE NSW

The Espresso Coffee Making Skills Statement of Attainment offers practical coffee training. Useful if the camp role includes a café station; it is optional preparation for that duty and does not replace practice in a busy service. Check campus availability and course fees.

Camp induction and progression

Kitchen and hospitality support need training in their own duties, not a surfing-coach qualification. Surf Camp Australia’s coaching training offer is for successful coach applicants with experienced surfing skills.

How to apply

Lead with the support tasks you can already do: kitchen prep, cleaning rooms, reception or guest enquiries. Include one concrete example, available dates and whether you need accommodation.

Apply for support work by name. Surf-coaching jobs need separate ocean-safety and coaching credentials; the camp setting does not make those qualifications necessary for every kitchen or housekeeping role.

What can you earn?

For paid kitchen, reception or housekeeping work covered by the Hospitality Award, the minimum follows the duties rather than the surf-camp setting. Unpaid educational placements are a separate route.

ClassificationCasual weekdaySaturdaySunday
Level 1$33.05$39.66$46.27
Level 2$33.85$40.62$47.39
Level 3$34.96$41.96$48.95

These figures apply to adults in the named Hospitality Award classifications, not every job with this title. A registered enterprise agreement or a different industry award can apply. The classification follows the actual duties.

Rates are per hour before tax and exclude super. Casual loading is already included. These are ordinary-hours minimums from 1 July 2026; overtime, public holidays and late-night additions are separate.

These full rates apply from age 20 under the Hospitality Award. Younger employees serving liquor receive the adult rate for their classification.
