Marina attendant jobs in Australia

Help boat owners, organise arrivals and keep the waterfront running. Compare marina customer service with more physical boatyard roles before applying.

This could suit you if…

You like a mix of customer service and outdoor upkeep around boats and waterfront facilities.

The trade-offs

Boatyard tasks can need different skills from reception. A marina job does not automatically include a berth or somewhere to live.

What would I actually do?

Marina attendants help boat owners and visitors, handle bookings or berthing payments and keep waterfront facilities clean and usable. The job can mix customer service with outdoor upkeep.

Boatyard work is more focused on launching, retrieving and maintaining boats, sometimes supporting a lifting team. It can require different skills from reception and general marina attendance.

Marinas can be suburban or regional workplaces. Your commute needs to work around the roster; working at a marina does not itself provide a berth or permission to live aboard.

Which marina jobs can I start with?

Reception and customer service

Bookings, berth payments, answering boat-owner enquiries and general site presentation can suit a backpacker with reception, retail or hospitality experience. Accurate records and reliable availability matter more than sounding like an experienced sailor.

Dock and boatyard work

Outdoor roles can involve cleaning, preparing boats, assisting with launches and maintaining the site. Marina Bayside’s boatyard role includes assisting lifting operations and applying marine coatings. Those duties are more practical and physical than reception work.

Operating lifting equipment, driving vessels or doing licensed trade work requires the relevant skills and authorisation. A general marina introduction course does not qualify you to operate machinery.

Accommodation is separate

For a backpacker without a vehicle, check the marina’s location against affordable rooms and the earliest public-transport services.

Is a marina course worth paying for?

Marinas 101: optional industry introduction

The Marina Industries Association offers a one-day course with no prerequisites. It covers marina operations, customer service, workplace safety and emergencies, with a site tour. Published fees are $643 plus GST for members and $848 plus GST for non-members—$707.30 and $932.80 including GST.

This can help someone planning a longer marina career, but it is a substantial cost for a short backpacker job. Apply for suitable customer-service or assistant roles first; the course is not a universal entry requirement or machinery licence.

Role-specific training

Boatyard duties may need equipment training or particular licences. Choose those courses for a specific job requirement, rather than buying a bundle before you know whether you will be working at reception, on the docks or in the yard.

How to apply

Pick the right search terms: marina receptionist or customer service for office work; dockhand or boatyard assistant for practical outdoor work. Apply to the role your experience supports.

For reception, highlight bookings, payments and customer enquiries. For the yard, list outdoor work, tools, maintenance and boat-handling experience accurately. Add relevant licences without implying you can operate equipment you have not used.

Include your current location, available dates and how you will reach early or weekend shifts. d’Albora’s careers page is a broad recruitment route; the Marina Bayside page describes a specific boatyard assistant role in Taren Point.

Pay and working arrangements

Marina attendance combines customer service and practical waterfront work. Machinery operation, maintenance and specialist boat-handling responsibilities can change the role and its classification.

The linked employers do not publish a marina-attendant wage figure. A shipwright or licensed marine-trade vacancy is not a useful beginner-pay comparison.
