AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
Housekeeping turns rooms and shared spaces around to a consistent standard. It can suit someone who likes visible results and an organised routine, but the work is physical and time-sensitive. A hostel dormitory, holiday cabin and hotel bedroom create different cleaning and guest-contact demands.

You like practical tasks, clear routines and seeing the result of your work each shift.
Room deadlines, repeated bending and handling linen make it physical. Cleaning a holiday property is different from being on holiday there.
Check the room list, collect linen and supplies, and follow the property’s process for entering rooms. Make beds, clean bathrooms, remove waste and replenish items without disturbing guests’ belongings.
Report damage, maintenance faults and lost property through the agreed system. Finish by checking the room against the standard and telling reception which spaces are ready for arriving guests.
Entry housekeeping and experienced room-attendant vacancies are different starting points. Experience helps with room sequence, linen changes and completing checks to a deadline. If you are new, focus on jobs that offer induction and demonstrate reliability, safe cleaning and attention to detail.
Guest departure and arrival times shape the workday. Repeated bending, bed-making and pushing loaded trolleys make this physical work. A hotel job does not automatically include a room, and a variable room allocation is not a guaranteed full week of hours.
Some employers train beginners; others need someone who can complete a room independently from the start. Commercial cleaning or hotel experience is useful evidence of hygiene standards, reliability and working to a room schedule.
Workplace induction covers chemical use, linen handling, equipment and procedures for sharps or contaminated materials. These are practical job skills; ordinary household cleaning does not cover every hotel or institutional cleaning task.
Workplace induction covers room cleaning, linen, chemical dilution, PPE and reporting damage. Practical speed and consistent room standards develop on the job; a hospitality qualification is not a universal prerequisite for entry-level housekeeping.

Describe cleaning experience precisely: bathrooms, changeovers, shared facilities, laundry or inspection routines. Reliability and attention to detail are easier to demonstrate with examples than with a list of personality traits.
Search housekeeping attendant, room attendant, public-area cleaner and laundry attendant. Read whether you would work directly for the accommodation business or for a cleaning contractor.
Under the Hospitality Award, general cleaning is guest service grade 1, while cleaning and servicing accommodation rooms is guest service grade 2. The distinction affects the minimum rate.
| Classification | Casual weekday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 — general cleaning and laundry | $33.05 | $39.66 | $46.27 |
| Level 2 — cleaning and servicing guest rooms | $33.85 | $40.62 | $47.39 |
These figures apply to adults in the named Hospitality Award classifications, not every job with this title. A registered enterprise agreement or a different industry award can apply. The classification follows the actual duties.
Rates are per hour before tax and exclude super. Casual loading is already included. These are ordinary-hours minimums from 1 July 2026; overtime, public holidays and late-night additions are separate.
These full rates apply from age 20 under the Hospitality Award. Younger employees serving liquor receive the adult rate for their classification.
Official classifications and pay tables
Mahony Group’s 22 September 2026 advert states a casual base rate of $33.85/hour for hostel housekeeping. It does not separately explain loading or super. This is a dated employer-advertised example; use the award comparison above to understand the employment basis.
