Hostel receptionist jobs in Australia

Hostel reception is a customer-service and administration job in a busy shared living environment. You may welcome tired arrivals, explain house rules and solve booking problems within minutes of each other. Being friendly helps, but accuracy with money, room allocations and guest information is just as valuable.

This could suit you if…

You enjoy helping travellers, organising bookings and being the person guests turn to for local advice.

The trade-offs

Payments, complaints and booking problems are part of reception. Shift patterns and the length of commitment may limit spontaneous travel.

What does the work involve?

Check arrivals, departures and bed availability; process payments and explain check-in details. Keep the booking system and housekeeping team aligned so guests are not sent to rooms that are still being prepared.

Answer questions about luggage, facilities and local transport, deal with straightforward changes and pass complicated refunds or disputes to the right manager. Record useful handover notes for the next shift.

Is reception work the same as a free-bed exchange?

No. A paid reception vacancy and an accommodation exchange are different arrangements. Reception can involve payments, booking changes and late arrivals, so a social personality helps but accuracy and handling guest problems also matter. Use the employer listing to establish whether accommodation is actually included.

Will it suit a short stay?

The hostel needs time to teach its booking system and procedures. Give a firm availability window rather than an open-ended “travelling around Australia”. Evening and overnight reception also affect when you can sleep in shared accommodation.

What do I need before applying?

Employers may ask for reception or customer-service experience and confidence using booking software. Name the systems you have used, but be clear if you will need training on the property’s system.

Night reception can include solo shifts, cash reconciliation and responding to lockouts. Day reception may offer more team support. RSA and first aid depend on additional duties; they are not universal reception qualifications.

Which training is worth doing?

First aid and CPR

St John offers HLTAID011 general first aid and HLTAID009 CPR through its state organisations. These include practical assessment; course delivery and fees appear in the local booking calendar.

St John Victoria: first-aid course example

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid: $199 for 4.75 hours in class plus pre-learning, or $225 for 7.75 hours in class without pre-learning. These are Victorian options; choose a listed venue and date. First aid is relevant when the role requires it, rather than a universal entry qualification.

How do I put together a good application?

Use examples of handling a complaint, balancing a till, managing appointments or answering calls while serving someone in person. Include languages only at a level you can actually use with guests.

Give your location, start date, length of stay and realistic shift availability. Apply to a named vacancy where possible; for an enquiry, specify reception rather than saying you will do anything.

What can you earn?

Front office grade 1 is Level 2 under the Hospitality Award; trained front office grade 2 is Level 3. These are adult casual minimums where that award covers the hostel.

ClassificationCasual weekdaySaturdaySunday
Level 2 — front office grade 1$33.85$40.62$47.39
Level 3 — trained front office grade 2$34.96$41.96$48.95

These figures apply to adults in the named Hospitality Award classifications, not every job with this title. A registered enterprise agreement or a different industry award can apply. The classification follows the actual duties.

Rates are per hour before tax and exclude super. Casual loading is already included. These are ordinary-hours minimums from 1 July 2026; overtime, public holidays and late-night additions are separate.

These full rates apply from age 20 under the Hospitality Award. Younger employees serving liquor receive the adult rate for their classification.

Brisbane advertised reception/all-rounder pay

Mahony Group’s 27 August 2026 Brisbane advert lists casual reception/all-rounder work at $32.31/hour, with additional penalties and loading mentioned but not explained. Do not add another 25% to this figure without clarification; super is not itemised. Duties include cleaning, so compare it with mixed hostel work rather than reception-only shifts.
