AUSTRALIA · JOB GUIDE
Event catering is the food-and-drink side of functions, conferences, stadium service and celebrations. Shifts can suit travellers who want varied workplaces, provided they can reach changing venues and accept uneven demand. Clarify whether you are applying for table service, a bar station, buffet support or kitchen assistance.

You enjoy teamwork and varied venues, with service built around weddings, functions and other events.
Work follows bookings rather than a guaranteed weekly routine. Setup, pack-down and travel between venues add to the commitment.
Attend the briefing, learn table numbers and service timing, and set up equipment or place settings. During service, carry food or drinks, clear efficiently and check questions with the responsible supervisor.
Work around speeches, performances and scheduled breaks. Pack-down can include clearing stock and equipment after guests leave, so the advertised event finish may be earlier than your finish time.
Carry only the belongings you can store safely and allow time for staff check-in or security access. Save the coordinator’s number before arriving.
Learn who can answer ingredient and allergen questions. Never guess from a dish’s appearance; pass the question to the kitchen or supervisor.
Compare several weeks of likely work before relying on events to cover rent. Weekend peaks can be useful, but you may need another compatible source of hours between bookings.
Check RSA requirements for alcohol duties and food-safety expectations for the work assigned. Different stations on the same event can require different experience.
Tray carrying, plate service and cash handling are useful skills. Some agencies place experienced staff directly with clients, so beginner catering support and experienced table-service bookings are different entry routes.
Free Victorian Government online learning covering food handling, personal hygiene, contamination, allergens, storage and cleaning. It is non-accredited and does not replace a Food Safety Supervisor qualification.
Check the local regulator before booking. This NSW regulator page explains NSW training; use the parent hospitality guide for other states and recognition rules.
Classroom RSA training in Sydney and surrounding suburbs. Published price: $190 (14 October 2026). A USI and identification are required. This is a NSW course; other states have their own recognition rules.
TCP’s NSW RSA course covers SITHFAB021: $190, seven hours plus breaks, in Sydney CBD and listed suburban venues. A USI, required identification and an assessment device are needed. Checked 23 October 2026. Other states: compare RSA providers and recognition.

Direct hotel recruitment for room attendants and food-and-beverage teams. Choose the department and location; casual, part-time and full-time roles appear separately.
Use hospitality agencies and caterers’ own application pages, then keep availability current. Include the service styles you know, your transport range and any certificates the recruiter requests.
Before accepting each shift, confirm the exact entrance, check-in contact, parking or public-transport access, uniform and expected end time. An event name alone may not identify the staff meeting point.
Hospitality Award catering work uses food-and-beverage classifications based on duties and training. These adult casual minimums illustrate Level 2 service and Level 3 trained service.
| Classification | Casual weekday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 2 | $33.85 | $40.62 | $47.39 |
| Level 3 | $34.96 | $41.96 | $48.95 |
These figures apply to adults in the named Hospitality Award classifications, not every job with this title. A registered enterprise agreement or a different industry award can apply. The classification follows the actual duties.
Rates are per hour before tax and exclude super. Casual loading is already included. These are ordinary-hours minimums from 1 July 2026; overtime, public holidays and late-night additions are separate.
These full rates apply from age 20 under the Hospitality Award. Younger employees serving liquor receive the adult rate for their classification.
