Melbourne Airport to City: Transport & Arrival Guide

First, check the airport code on your ticket. MEL is Melbourne Airport, also called Tullamarine. AVV is Avalon, a different airport with different transfers. A cheap flight can still work well, but include the airport journey when comparing your total cost. Prices below are in Australian dollars, checked on 17 October 2026.

What’s the easiest way into the city?

For a first arrival at MEL with a backpack and a city hostel, SkyBus to Southern Cross is a straightforward starting point: $25.90 adult one way, followed by a walk, tram or short ride to your address. Bus 901 plus a train is cheaper but needs more time and a connection. There is no operating passenger train from the airport terminal. Landing at AVV? Use the separate Avalon route below.

01 / GETTING THERE

SkyBus Melbourne City Express

  1. Collect your bags and follow SkyBus signs. The operator's current stop map lists T1, T3 and T4, outside baggage claim; from international T2 follow signs to the nearby stop.
  2. Buy a separate SkyBus ticket online, in its app or at a card-only kiosk.
  3. Get off at the Southern Cross coach terminal on Spencer Street. Open your saved hostel address before choosing your final connection.

This is a city-terminal transfer, not a hostel drop-off. SkyBus does not take myki. Its booking page currently states 4am–1am daily; check the live timetable for your arrival rather than assuming an overnight service.

Local bus 901 + city train

  1. Walk to the public-bus interchange on the ground floor of the T4 car park. This is separate from the kerbside SkyBus stop.
  2. Take route 901 towards Frankston and leave at Broadmeadows Station. You are only using the first part of this long route.
  3. Transfer to a citybound Craigieburn-line train. Use the journey planner for the best city stop and any service changes.

Use myki, or the supported contactless payment option shown by Transport Victoria; keep the same card or device throughout. The bus and train can fit within one two-hour fare. Add time for purchasing a card, missed connections and the walk from your city stop. This is not an all-night airport connection.

Taxi or Uber to the hostel

  1. Have the full hostel address ready, including the suburb. Compare the whole-car price with separate bus tickets plus onward transport.
  2. Follow signs to an official taxi/Uber split rank: opposite T1 arrivals, outside T2 international arrivals, or at ground level in the T4 transport hub.
  3. For Uber, follow the app's pickup instructions and match the car and driver before boarding. For a taxi, use the signed rank.

Do not follow unsolicited ride offers from the arrivals hall. Pickup arrangements can change; airport signs and your booking instructions take priority over old maps.

Arriving at Avalon: Avalon City Express

  1. Choose Avalon City Express when buying your ticket. The Melbourne City Express ticket is for Tullamarine.
  2. Follow SkyBus signs outside the Avalon terminal. Tickets are available online, in the app or at airport kiosks.
  3. Travel to Southern Cross, then continue to your hostel.

Services meet major flights and the operator says it waits for delayed arrivals. Check the flight-linked timetable. Do not apply MEL's 901 bus directions to Avalon.

From arrivals to checking in

01

Save the last part of the journey

Screenshot your hostel address, booking reference and reception instructions before flying. Southern Cross is a useful arrival point, but a hostel described as Melbourne can be well outside walking distance. Check the actual map pin, especially for St Kilda, Fitzroy or another suburb.

02

Choose the onward connection

From Southern Cross, compare the walk with a tram or short ride. Trams are free only when your whole tram journey stays inside the Free Tram Zone; check the boundary before boarding. A ride to St Kilda is not covered by the city free zone. Your SkyBus ticket does not include ordinary public transport.

03

Plan for a late landing

Flight arrival time is not the time you reach the kerb. Allow for baggage and border processing, and check services for when you will actually be ready. Arrange late hostel access before departure. If you miss the last usable bus connection, compare a direct ride with waiting for morning; do not travel to a closed reception without entry instructions.

Questions before you land

Can I take a train straight from Melbourne Airport?

No. For the public-transport option described here, first take bus 901 to Broadmeadows, then change to a train. Airport rail project references are not directions to an operating terminal station.

Check official guidance

Does the temporary half-price fare include SkyBus?

No. Victoria's temporary public-transport discount excludes SkyBus. The $2.85 two-hour fare quoted here is for the ordinary Zone 1+2 network; recheck it for travel after the advertised discount period.

Check official guidance

Do I need to buy a myki just for this transfer?

Not for SkyBus: it sells its own tickets. For the ordinary bus and train route, Transport Victoria now lists Visa/Mastercard contactless payments alongside myki. Use the same physical card or the same device for every tap, and check supported payment details before travel.
